Your either going to pay a bunch or find an old relic in a pasture and spend a bunch restoring it

Both very true statements. You can get a much better deal when the nice weather is going out and the car is going into storage. Spring is the best time to sell , not buy. Finding a car guy to look over a vehicle is very smart , even better is finding a car guy who is into that model/make as they are super familiar with its special needs. If I was buying a GTO , Nessmuck would be the guy I would want to look at it. Buying a Mopar , I would seek out a Mopar guy from a car club.

You need to go to the spring Iola Car show in Wisconsin. They bring everything there from totally restored Camaros to Parts cars and everything in between. Used to go there all the time when I was a Teenager. Too bad old Jayson is gone he had Garages of old stuff but when he died his kids sold it all. That was just outside of Shawano on the res.
God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

I'd start with your budget or limit , and then see what that can buy you as far as model and quality of restoration ,
Do you care if it is a numbers matching car and mostly original ?
As far as Camaros go , they made alot of them , and you can find just about anything you want , prices will be all over the place depending on many factors
I'd look hard at the Pontiac firebird too

I'm driving a convertible right now. Years ago I owned a '71 Mercury Cougar with a 351 Cleveland. Blue with a white top. Currently driving a budget convertible. A '05 Chrysler Sebring. Black with a tan top. They can be had for cheap , $3,000 to $5,000 for a nice one. I got mine for $1,000. But it needs a new top which I am going to do myself for $600 or so. If I had someone do it for me it might cost north of $2,000. Needs a few other minor things but other than that it is a solid car.

I just got this car because it was cheap and I know it's history and it was very well maintained. Was owned by my neighbors granddaughter and her dad is a top shelf Chrysler mechanic and the car is very sound. Just cheap transportation for me.

You could probably find a 64 65 Pontiac LeMans convertible in the 30 to 35 grand range
Maybe even one with a 4spd to give you that muscle car feel
Alot of GTO clones out there

As someone who has a 1968 Camaro, I bought when I was a kid in college, cleaned me out..it was a basket case and needed everything ground up, I spent 15 years restoring it. When I had time I didnt have $$ and when I had $$ I didnt have time...
If there is one piece of advice I could give you. Buy a decent driver to start. The cleaner the better. Pay UPFRONT for what you want. You can always do motor, wheels, interior, brakes, etc...but body and paint are huge money and time sucks. Not to mention you arent driving it when those are being done, all the other stuff can be upgraded in a weekend if you want.
Had I even taken a loan on the car and bought something nicer I would have been enjoying the car for over a decade rather than a pile of parts...and the car would have appreciated to more than I paid for it.
I think I bought it in 2005 ish..at that time a decent or better driver could be had for $15-20k. Instead I bought a project for $3500 cause that was all I had.
Now a driver is probably $25-30k I see many for sale and they are disgusting and need everything done anyhow, someone elses problem they are trying to dump. But they are out there, someone has a driver that is decent 20fter for $20k someplace.
So I wish I would have taken the $3500 and put it down on a $15-20k car and been driving it and upgrading things as needed over the years.
Everyones situation is different, but if its really what you want, consider paying a little more if you find something you like and allows you to enjoy it from day one. I promise when you get behind the wheel you wont regret it.
Also I had a 1970 Caddy Convertible that I drove daily for a while, the convertible is fun in the summer, but fall the top is up in WI. Summer in the rain, those beautiful summer days with the top down might not be as many as you think in WI. With a hard top you can run in any weather, or season (minus winter obviously) and that means more days to enjoy your car...and if you get one you will want to enjoy it as much as possible.
Good luck!

Back in my high school years, I had a 55 Ford Sunliner convertible with little to no rust. It was my only car and I sold it because the harsh winters were too hard on the top. I wish I still had it. Probably be worth some bucks today.

I wholeheartedly agree about ragtops. I took a 3 hr ride with my Dad once in his 63 Impala SS convertible. Started out fine, after an hour the sun came out and the temps rose. I felt like I was being cooked in a oven. Black car with a black interior. I find nothing enjoyable about riding around in them. Before he died he asked me if I wanted the car. I told him to sell it and use the money for himself. No way did I want that. I had one ragtop of mine own. A '68 LeMans, red with a red interior. About a week of driving it around I was over it. Sold it after owning for only a couple of months. I have owned many classic cars, a couple of GTO's with Hi Po engines (RAIII, RAV, and 455SD), and a an assortment of other Pontiacs. My favorite was a '67 Ventura. 400, 4 speed, bench seat, 8 lug wheels, factory transistor ignition a great car. Ran like a top, rode nicely loved it. If I could anyone back it'd be the Ventura.

Got a 40 chevy PU, that is widened six and a half inches and on a Z’ed tonner frame. Was gonna be my welding truck, but wasn’t done in time for when needed! 32 chevy sedan, built the frame and suspension, wood in car taken out and rebuilt with steel. Angle whacked top, zz3 crate engine, AC, custom dash, about 75% done and in primer. 60 chevy SW that I used to race. 2 dr, that I’ve only seen about ten more of in my life. Owned it since before I went to Nam. Held both ends of the AHRA records in R/stock formula 3. I want to pro street it for a driver. Have a brand new 454 crate motor with a Street and Performance fuel injected tunnel ram for it.
Got my shop finished here where I live, but then closed my welding shop in Manhattan, after 45 years. Equipment had to go somewhere, so what I couldn’t sell, got moved into my new shop.now I have no room for my projects, and they are 45 miles away! It drives me nuts!

Lee..
Is the car complete with all the moldings and bumpers ?
Did the 60 have a carrier bearing...2 piece drive shaft ?
Bet you got rid of that...for a one piece shaft.
That would turn some heads at the Cruise nights

Ha ha, it was always pretty popular! Especially when it stood on it’s bumper. Yes, I changed it over to a one piece driveline. The old car had to weigh in at 3960#, min weight, and the engine was a sixty over 283, or 292 CI. Run a 5:86 gear in the rear end, with 32 in tall M&H slicks, with a Brazwell 2 barrel carb. Had a forty pound flywheel, with a home made 27 pound harmonic balancer, and it took a couple of bulbs on the tree just to get the engine wound up! A 2:64 low Borg Warner four speed, that had been slick shifted. Car would run 13: oo’s at 107 MPH. Put a four barrel holley on it once, and it ran 12:62!
Forgot to answer about the completeness of it. Yes, been collecting many things that had gotten discarded when I started racing it. Back floorpans have rotted away, and a little rust in the quarters, behind the rear tires.

A 1967 Olds 442 conv...will turn some heads.
Or a ..same year Buick Grand Sport.
Unless your a Ford guy I'm looking for a 1965 Buick Riviera. '63 through '65 where very similar to each other, but the stacked hide-away headlights on the '65 is what its all about for me.

When I dragged my 57 Chevy Station Wagon...I'd always get paired up with a 55 Chevy 265...6:13 gear...and kick my butt for 1350 feet...but I'd catch him. I also had a 454 dual quad...junk yard motor and 4:56 ...daily drivah. I cant believe the HP you guys get out of those little small blocks

Modern stuff is alot different than "back in the day" Nessy. The heads have come along ways, even on production vehicles, and after market blocks have a larger bore spacing which allows bigger bores. In the dirt circle track racing I've done until recently, an engine in the 358c.i. limit class needs to be putting out 6-700 hp, the lower number with stock production cast heads and the latter with aftermarket heads. This is also with a 11:1 compression ratio. In the open classes, you need to be well over 800, I'm hearing getting near 900hp. These engines are over 400c.i. and fully ported race heads. How fast you wanna go???? Depends on how much money ya got! You're looking at 60k for a decent dirt motor. I forgot to mention, they're also aluminum blocks and don't weight much over 300lbs.

Had a friend that should have been a mathematician. He came by the shop one day, and had a formula for figuring horsepower of the engine by what the ET was, speed, rear end ratio, sizeof tires, etc, etc! I was amazed, he came up with my little 292 making 580 HP. I ask him how accurate that could possibly be, he said just about dead on with the right info! Drag racing has changed so much that I’m not interested in it anymore. It has become a spectator sport for me now!

It's the 6 but that doesn't matter because I'm having a V8 put in during the restoration
Fellas I know I'm going to catch heck all the way through the process on this but I'm new to the old car game its a learning curve, this seems to be just at the lower cost didn't want to bite off more than I could chew on the first one

I bought this 1979 Caprice about 10 years ago. It came with a 305 3 speed automatic. Really tall highway gears. I proceeded to build a 383 (350 stroker) and had a 700R4 trans. built. I picked up an 8.5 rearend and installed 3.73 gears. Its fun but a plain jane. I might unload it and build something else.

In it's day (60's-70's) the 6cyl was bashed a lot because so many cars had V-8's Today , 6 cylinder cars are kinda looked at like it has the 'big' engine compared to a 4cyl. No shame anymore. I had a '66 stang hardtop with the 289 V8 , the 6cyl is only a bit smaller and provides plenty power to get around.

It's pointless to swap the six for a v8 unless you put one in that leaves an ear to ear grin on your face , and that will cost you 8 to 10 grand ........then there's the tranny upgrade........

When ya get down to all the things that would go into a build like that , you would almost be lucky to keep it under $20k Even a mild swap like a stock 289cid 2bbl would cost a couple grand minimum with only about a 30-40bhp gain over the stock 6cyl.

Hard to go wrong with a '64 1/2 - '66. Convertable Mustang. Easy to care for , parts readily available.

Very nice mustang! While I can surely appreciate 60’s and 70’s muscle, I have shared many of the same circles as hippie for the last 35 years or so. The dirt sprint car division now running cylinder heads @ 295cc intake runners, the fuel injection on these things(alcohol), have 3” stacks that you can drop a baseball in, the small block Chevy really isn’t a small block Chevy any more in Hippie and I’s world. Sorry Hippie, I guess the MOPAR and ford stuff have came a long too! 😜😂

Years ago I owned a '71 Mercury Cougar with a 351 Cleveland. Blue with a white top. Years ago I owned a 67 Mercury Cyclone GT convertible. It originally came with a 390 but didn't have an engine when I bought it. I put my 351 Cleveland in it. It was tan and white.
Eh...wot?

Not too shabby I always liked the Firehawk package on that model. What are you doing to it? The customer backed into a low wooden post... So I have to remove the rear bumper cover and repair the crack. Then refinish the cover and reinstall
