Met Gary Groenewold & The Beaver Wagon at Carson's Pizza barn yard in Adams, N.Y. to sell my beaver plews this morning. There were 15 other trapper's pickup trucks waiting to sell as well. Ended up selling 16 larger beaver & "NO SALED" 15 med/small plews. These were raw, rough skinned, frozen, folded in half pelts. Prices as follows: 2 3XL @ $40.00. 4 2XL @ $32.00. 8 1XL- LG @ $22.00. 2 Med @ $10.00. 1 Past Prime 1XL mink @ $4.00. 16 Beaver total @ $404.00. $25.25 average. Gary offered $5.00 each for 15 med/small beaver which we "no saled" as we already had a better offer. Thought there was a tough grade on the 1XL which Gary said were "small 1XL's" & he graded/payed for them as larges. Saw Muskrats sold @ $6-$4-$2.50-$1. Mink: female $4.00.Males $5.00 to $7.00. Otter: $35-$25-$20. Grey Fox: $12.00. Red Fox: $10.00. Bobcat: $60.00 Coon: $5-$3-$1. Coyotes -Not Happy !! $7-$5-$3-NV. Fisher $40-$30-$20. Castor: $15.00 a pound. The Beaver Wagon was jam-packed 3/4ths full to the ceiling with mostly frozen beaver. Beaver trapping is alive & well in Northern New York State. Big Thank you to Gary Groenewold for providing New York trappers with a fair, honest, & convenient option for selling their wild fur. That's what I saw & how I did !!! walleyed

So, if you would have sold your whole assortment of beaver you would have averaged $15.45 at the rat wagon?

So, if you would have sold your whole assortment of beaver you would have averaged $15.45 at the rat wagon? Is that what the math says ? We didn't calculate our average using the price offers of beaver that we didn't sell. w

My god, you guys are dense !!! I reported on the average for the beaver I did sell. NOT the beaver I didn't sell. What's your point ? w

The point is your average was skewed because you only sold your higher value pelts. It's not a true average for others to look at.

The point is your average was skewed because you only sold your higher value pelts. It's not a true average for others to look at. The real point is everybody had all the information they needed, full disclosure, to know what happened at the beaver wagon. Nobody was trying to deceive anyone as the good, the bad, & the ugly was still there for all to see. I sold half of my larger green beaver for a $25.25 average & will sell the green medium/small kits to someone else for more than Gary was willing to pay, and then told you about it No different than selling your #1 castor for $100.00 a pound, holding back your shells to make lure, & committing your number #2 to FHA purgatory !!! LOL Or coon trapping & throwing the sows, kits, & dinks in the ditch and only selling your 3XL, 4XL, & Jumbos at auction. Happens all the time when wild fur products get marketed. Please excuse me for striving to market my green fur where I could realize the best value on it & then telling you about it. Little wonder why very few trappers post their efforts & results on how they market their fur for the benefit of others. For my trapping reality & situation, Groeny still Rocks !!! walleyed

I too saw Groeny today. I thought his price on unfinished beaver was pretty fair. I do agree with Walleyed that he may have hedged some on the smaller sizes. Maybe not so good on finished goods that could have been marketed other places. Overall, if you had decent sized unfinished beaver, you did pretty good. Same thing down South....^^^^ But, Gary stated in a video about a year ago this very thing ^^^^ He said spend your time catching beaver and let them do the put up (as they had mechanical fleshing machines.) Raw, frozen beaver = you will do pretty good selling to GFW = looser sizing and looser grade. So, spend your time catching more beaver, but you have to have the freezer space.

However, I was just responding to your asking what was the point of some of us bringing up what the average would have been had you been all in. (And the above was the point). Glad you're happy with your transaction.

I would rather see the thread say "Groeny Pays Fair $" rather than Rocks. Unless there are something special about rocks they have no value. For us southerners...Groeny Rocks! There is NO other fur selling option in the SE US.

Walleyed has premium northern fur. Are prices at income producing levels? If not, what do I care.

Walleyed has premium northern fur. Are prices at income producing levels? If not, what do I care. What is income? Reportable to IRS? Enough $$ to buy a happy meal? Are you producing enough fur to call it "income"? Never have seen a post from you about your fur income or sale averages or even how much fur/numbers you produce. Just comments on why some us shouldn't sell pelts in a down market because it hurts your market.

Reminds me of the otter craze some years ago, guy's turning down 115.00 ave. on them cause they were sure they could get 125.00 elsewhere, doubt anyone would turn down 100.00 bill for a otter now!
Beaver get back down to a 10.00 average you will be missing the 25.00 beaver days. Plus you will have to put them up to get a 10 dollar bill, lol.

My complaint is why can't we have high beaver pelts prices, high castor prices, and high otter prices all in one season? Oh, and throw in high nutria prices if it's no extra bother.

Some good info to be learned on Tman about marketing your fur....
A) that was a poor average..I wouldn't have sold my fur for that. B) you didn't include in your avg the ones you held back...so that ain't a true average. C) send your pelts to FH...your averages will be higher. D) don't sell to the "rat/beaver wagon"...you'll lose $$. E) Groney knows what your averages will be b4 you arrive to sell. F) I can put a minimum on my fur at FH....cause I am a buyer. G) premium northern fur always brings more $$. H) southern fur is junk and I don't really understand why your avgs are close to mine. I) don't sell your poor fur in a down market....cause then my good stuff won't sell as high. J) if you don’t put up your pelts....you ain’t a real trapper. K) my averages are _______.......before those FH commissions & deductions....but.... L) when is my FH check gonna arrive in the mail? BB) FH auction report: Averages Shown are Sundry Owner 1st Section Goods. Hmmm? Why not the real sales average?

This site amazes me with all the math wizards and fur market experts sharing their make believe knowledge.
Nice job Walleyed! You sold the desireable fur for a nice price and average, and where the buyer lowballed on less desireable you pulled back to find a better market for those furs. Probably 99% of the others on here would have sold all because they're too lazy to market their furs wisely and then come on here and cry that groeney ripped them off.
You set a fine example on how to properly market your fur.

M) you have to search for other markets during low market times....or buy a fur sewing machine. N) I'd just tan them all when the market is poor.....all of em?? 100s of pelts?? O) I'll never send fur to FH again...because... P) I'll never sell fur to Groeny again....because... Q) local association auctions are the best place to sell.....because... R) there are no FH agents in the deep South.... S) wait until the next FH auction for the fur market to set/ establish for that species. T) Groeny throws/mixes seller's fur up into the truck b4 a price is agreed upon. U) you didn’t use enough nails on those beaver pelts. V) those bit up/mis-stretched beaver brought nearly same $ as perfect beavers. W) is that in Canadian or US dollars? X) shearable beaver always bring more $ than hatters. You set a fine example on how to properly market your fur. Thanks Mac, Appreciate the kind words. Just trying to put out the information on the small bit of wild fur that passes through my hands via trapping & other means. Never claimed to be an expert like some of the colorful characters on here. But like Strother Martin famously stated in "Cool Hand Luke" : "SOME PEOPLE YOU JUST CAN'T REACH" !!! w

I read your list. Over half of that stuff has come out of Boco's mouth . If i comment on most of the prices walleyed saw, and think they are at unprofitable levels it is not a reccomendation to anybody do anything. M6st of those prices are bad and most any other marketing option will be simularly bad.

Walleyed has premium northern fur. Are prices at income producing levels? If not, what do I care. What kis income? Reportable to IRS? Enough $$ to buy a happy meal? Are you producing enough fur to call it "income"? Never have seen a post from you about your fur income or sale averages or even how much fur/numbers you produce. Just comments on why some us shouldn't sell pelts in a down market because it hurts your market. Produce all the fur you want, l told you before it does not affect my market. If you watch the guy greonwald interveiw from hooser trappers supply he explains how supply effects the fur market .

Dirt, If I lived and trapped in Alaska and bought fur too, a $7000 fur check would be just pocket change. Swamp has a very limited market to sell his fur according to him. It's clear that it is difficult for him to see the forest thru the trees. Yes....I have a such a limited fur market down here that if you lived here you would just go play golf or something and would sell all your trapping gear.
