The old cedar strip and canvas canoes were done up that way BUT they were generally stored indoors high and dry for a reason.

With modern epoxy resins though service life may be better.

On that video, I would go to titebond III rather than II. I've used both to assemble bee boxes and frames. The III is the better of the two but both are brittle when dry and joints are vulnerable to cracking under stress, particularly if butt jointed and or not clamped when setting up. Best results are long grain to long grain with clamping pressure.

a gallon of total boat poly resin and hardener is 45 on amazon

a gallon of tite-bond III is 42 from ace

tite-bond II is labeled for indoor use. at 30 a gallon

you can do poly resin right on the wood and since it is a building resin no sanding between coats either will need a good paint at the end.

poly resin hardens reasonably fast as you activated it , tite-bond is air dry

probably could do 3 truck bed covers on a gallon of poly resin

given the savings on sand paper I don't really see any savings to the poor mans approach and it would seem to take longer.

poly resin is quickly applied with a roller

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I'm just doing a table top for a pop up camper.
Bought it cheap used without a table.
Made a table from construction grade plywood I had.
Covered it with a really neat looking shelf liner. Which shrunk with summer heat.
So now poor mans fiberglass. But I'm wondering how smooth the plywood needs to be for a smooth finish.

Got the first coat on and the fabric. 1st top coat goes on later today. Went well. Just used a piece of cotton material the wife had.
That table is 40"X36". I used 1 + a little out of the 2nd 8oz bottle of glue. Need to get another bottle for the top coats.
Wife thinks I should paint it purple but I don't think so.lol
btw Titebond II is indoor outdoor
