Not from the mid west, but have caught hundred of thousands salt water minnows ,"killies", commercially.

Not sure what trap your using, but if its the small Gee trap try this. Close off one end funnel, bait with fish pellets or catfood, dry or canned, put bait under the working funnel and set crosswise to the current in a deeper spot, cut bank, etc, funnel close to the bank. Add weight to keep trap stable, Oh, and you need to have minnows to catch minnows...lol

See if that works for you, the Gee traps suck but if that's what you have then go with it, closing off one side helps those traps to hold the catch.... let me know....I have other tricks too, lol

Those small 1.5" bluegills you get in minnow traps are great walleye bait!
Bread is what we use in minnow traps

Around here we catch them in the smaller creeks, the type that has riffles with deeper pools here and there. You should see the minnows scattering around when you walk up to the pool.

We use the wire type traps baited with stale bread. And we always set two traps because a water snake in a trap puts it out of commission for the night which happens occasionally lol.

Glass traps work much better than steel mesh. Last I checked you can find them on Amazon. I have my best luck in the deep portions of streams that have some mild current. Saltine crackers are my bait of choice.

Glad you're on Trapperman J Harrell. Seen your videos on youtube about minnow trapping & getting water snakes in the traps at times.
Like how your dog just stairs at the snakes. Our dog is just the opposite. You have some great videos

Any cheap minnow trap works.
If setting in current be sure one end faces the current. If set sideways they follow the scent to the side of the trap instead of the ends with the holes.
Along bridge walls is great.
In calm water set alongside structure and parallel to the structure. Minnows often hug structure and they easily find the ends of the trap to enter.
I don’t like still water as it takes them longer to find the holes to enter because scent disperses everywhere with no current.
Take a small sandwich baggie and make multiple small slits in it.
Take small pieces of bread bigger than the slits and smear heavily with peanut butter and place into the baggie and seal.
Get a large safety pin and wire the end of the safety pin that is opposite the side of the safety pin that opens to the trap. Wire it to the CENTER of the trap. Wire the safety pin on the inside of the trap.
Wire the safety pin on the side of the trap opposite where the string to tie off the trap is attached.
That way when you lower the trap into the water the safety pin will be on the bottom. Inside of the trap.
Open safety pin and attach the baggie with bait. I attach the baggie through the seals you press to close. You want the safety pin attached to an end of the baggie.
When placed in water the baggie and bait floats in the center of the trap and the slits disperse the scent.
If the bait is against the side of the trap the minnows try to get at it and don’t enter the trap.
With this method I catch hundreds a night.
If in clear water i watch them enter within minutes.

It’s cheap and works… I’ll put a pic of it in scale when I get to the house… bait seems to enter it better than wire

im from the midwest and i use the wire funnel minnow traps with trotline on them and tie it to a stick then scout out a good minnow area which is usually in cattails in a pond or in a somewhat deep part of a creek like2 foot of water then put ripped up bread so it really floats then put some hotdog in the bottom cause then you will pick up some crawdads and idk I like having different species in a check

…. $6.99 on Amazon… just make sure you remove and gorilla glue the plastic tabs back on the bottom of the wires or they’ll eventually fall off

I have 7-8 of the Gee’s Silver minnow traps. I typically walk our creeks until I find a good school of minnows and through the trap in. I have caught them in current or calm water.

If I’m baiting trotlines and need a couple hundred baits fast, I use a 20’ seine. Yes I seine by myself. We are blessed with an abundance of minnows.

Not all water is created equal. Choose cricks that dump into rivers and the further upstream the better. Generally the downstream side of culvert is washed out more and those pools should hold minnows. River shiner, creek chubbs, darters, dace etc all are good fishing bait. Build a trap out of 4x4 wire 15’ día by 30 long and put a hand full of dog food in and you will catch minnows. You only bait trap once the water warms up. Cool water temps dog food is not necessary just set trap with the current.
