My mother had surgery in December and had several complications after. Was in and out of ICU for 2 months, and now on a vent and will never come off. Shes confused, agitated and in pain constantly. We have very difficultly decided to put her in hospice this weekend and remove the vent. She would never have wanted to live in a box unable to move, walk, talk, or do the things she enjoys.

This is the hardest thing I feel I have ever gone through, and I ask for your prayers for my family and I. I want you all to think about giving a written directive to your family so they dont have to choose as we did. its tearing us all to pieces inside. Please please write a directive for your loved ones.

I do know the difficulty you have gone through. It is heart rending. We had to make that decision a few years back, and really struggled afterward. While going through her belongings later, we found a sheet of note paper that spelled out that she would never want to be left in that position and hoped that if she were, we would be merciful and take her off life support. That was a blessing to us. May you make peace with your decision and may she go in peace. Prayers for you.

We have Hospice services in my area. Our system may differ from your services.

My mother had medical staff come into the home to see her and evaluate her 2 - 3X week. She wasn't taken anywhere. It was very peaceful for her that she could stay at home. They gave her pain meds etc. She didn't hold on for long once she got to that point, however she was 98 and had lived a good long life. It was her time to go and she was ready.

Very tough time for you and all her loved ones, I went through it with my mom. Praying for peace for you all.

Went thru it with a uncle back in 2005.even though he didn't have anything written down we knew how he felt about it. It was still hard for his 2 daughters and me to tell the doctors what he would of wanted.when I got got back from the hospital I went straight to my parents house and told them I know how you both feel about being on life support.but put it in writing so everyone knows.they did and it's on file at the hospital they use.

The hospice nurses and aides my dad had were extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly what he needed and made his last days comfortable. They were a God send!

Lost my mom to cancer back in Dec. of 2000. Hospice was wonderful. Very sorry to hear about your mom.
