I am working a site in the city. There's a creek that flows along side of a paved walking/biking path, and the beavers built a dam which is encroaching on the path. So, I figured there's a pair in there. I set two pass-through sets using snares. Fortunately, where the dam is located it's out of sight of the popular walking path.

Here's the first set. It's what a call a pass-through set. There's a dab of lure on the limb that's leaning against the small tree.

Here's a close-up.

This morning I had this adult female, and I was happy to get her first. I'm hoping the next snare had the adult male, and I might be done.

Here's the second set, another pass-through.

And to my dismay, I have a yearling. That means there's probably three or four more beavers here.

Hi Mr D.
Hard to see for sure, looks like the first pic has the loop slightly submerged but the second one is clear out of the water.
What is the optimum diameter and percentage submerged for this set.
Thanks

They're both about a third submerged. It doesn't show up that way in the picture. The loops are about 8 inches.

Paul. What percentage of beaver still alive when snare caught?

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

Always nice until you discover there's 3 or 4 adult females living in the place, lol. 99 percent of mine are alive in snares unless im not wanting them alive when i get there.

And how I found out beaver can jump and will come at you. Luckily I had a clear path for a fast reverse.

Is there a reason why you wouldn't use a #330 (unless you think they've seen a #330 in the past)?

I'm always worried I'll show up with a live beaver only to have an audience watching (and filming me) dispatching it.

Just one of my fears and I know people show up in the darndest places. But probably a little more urban around here.

I use that set a couple times a year. Learned from you're old trapping video. It's a great set. I typically use it with a #330 tight up against a big tree with one small lean stick and the lure up above the trap as stated. It's a great set for those times when you can't use the bank.

Always a good idea to have the after pictures before posting the before pictures.

I like that set too. I've used it and slight variations with success.

It's quite a walk to get to the site and snares weigh much less than 330's. I like using the tool most suited for the situation, and this situation screamed snares. The snares are set about 50 yards from the path with dense underbrush between the path and the dam. It is a swampy place where i have to wade knee deep water in some places. it's not a place where folks go, so I have no problem dispatching the beavers without spectators.

Trapping a place now that borders a highway. I've found cement blocks at all the culverts along the way. Beaver seem to be castor shy. What lure do you use in this set under such conditions? Oil sac work?
