Most of the Grebe species have the red glowing eyes that really catch a photographers attention. These are eared grebes which nest in large colonies in shallow vegetation filled sloughs here in SD. Babies have hatched in the past week and get to hitch a free ride on mom for a few days until they get too big, dad is doing most of the hunting.

Lovely shots. Tray. Grebes are here too, I think three different kinds. Red-Necked is one. They really raise a racket with each other in spring.

I can imagine what amazing close ups you'd take of loons. With their red eyes.

Look like my eyes in high school.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

We have 5 species of grebes here, red-necked are here sporadically and you are right they like to make noise. I photographed Westerns and Clark’s several weeks ago sitting on nests and hope to get back now that littles are out.
Breeding plumage looks are on the bucket list.
