I tied my own flies for large Trout for many years. Its funny that some flies that look really nice and you'd swear would catch a fish don't and some of the ugly misshaped ones that you'd never want anyone to see are killers. I even would tie several of the same pattern. Fish with a good reliable pattern and don't catch a thing, switch out the fly for another of the same pattern and all of sudden you start catching fish again. I never could figure it out.
Your stuff looks really good, hopefully they catch fish.
Its weird for sure. I think a good percentage of it has to do with confidence in what you are using, plus a smattering of coincidence. But some times tis weird, a tattered old faithful will work where a new lure even of the same pattern doesnt do as well. My fishing bud and I caught 27 musky this past season. The majority were on lures id made, which feels awesome!

They look Great Hutchy-Bet you cant wait to try them out eh?
Do you ever make replicas of the old musky lures that were used a lot back in the 60's? They were usually red and white, some two piece and some one piece like a big plug and some with a bucktail.

Thnx. And I havent, but generally the old ones like creek chubs, pikie minnows werevery simple, and work great. I should try at some point.

Man, those look great! You sir, have real talent. Those are too pretty to get tooth marks on.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I had a feller from Pennsylvania contact me about selling a few nutria pelts for tying flies. He told me that his pattern (a very simple pattern) made from nutria guard hairs out-catches any other hair. He has tried groundhog, squirrel, raccoon, etc, but nothing came close nutria. I sold him a couple of medium sized pelts for $8.00 each (market price for large ones at the time), but stipulated that I receive one of his nutria flies. He sent me $20.00 and a nutria fly. Everybody's happy happy happy. I don't fly fish (because of the choking hazard of the wings ), so I just have it around to admire how such a butt ugly fly could possibly be so effective.
