Have to opportunity to trap southern Mississippi this year. Around Columbia not real far from Louisiana. I’m coming from SW Pennsylvania so I’m sure it’s got to be different.
Mainly going to be targeting coyotes and cats.
First does anyone know how I can get a regulations book or find them online. Everything so far that I have found as been pretty vague.
Anyone have any tips for trapping Southern Mississippi? General soil conditions? Bait/lure recommendations, mainly anything weird you noticed with bait/lure.

Thanks in advance for any information.

If you're not around in the habit of observing where your feet and hands are going get into it.

Our snakes take naps during winter but never go totally inactive.

This. It can be 20 degrees, but a 70 degree day puts snakes and mosquitoes back in gear. Check mdwfp.com for rules, regs and license info.

Columbia is about an hour or so north of me. What time of the year are you coming and are you on private land. Ms. Has a dog season for deer that runs fairly late in the year and then a lot of folks rabbit hunt. Maybe ask the person that ask you down about this. Other than that like said the temp changes daily here. One day you need a bear skin jacket and the next you just need bare skin.

Southern Mississippi…I’m pretty sure thats the mosquito capital of the South, at least during turkey season. Hopefully “winter” is much better. Snakes and gators are year round down here and I’m sure they are over there as well. If they have cats like we do, you’ll have fun, lol. Make your best coyote set and a cat or possum will have it clogged. Good luck!

Sometime in February, probably middle of the month. The property is a 12,000 acres, mostly pine plantation. I will be sure to ask about that stuff though. Thanks for the info.
You ever get much freezing temps in February? I’m pretty much used to it be 20 degrees or less so just wondering what to plan for?
The way the manager talked there covered up with cats and coyotes so I’m hoping for a good trip.

It could be 20 today 70 tomorrow in February. Expect lows in the thirties highs in the fifties on average.

That time frame ought to put you right in the rainy season. The cold here goes to the bone being here it is a wet cold. Bring your thermals as there are none in the stores to be had. You will also want a coat that the cold doesn't blow through.Coming here from west central Illinois I used to laugh at the southerners talking about bitter cold at 20 above.

Good to know. If you’re from Mississippi I have a few regulations questions. I will only be on private land. Can you snare and set body grips on land? What’s your regulations on CITES tags? How do you go about getting them down there? Also can you use bait? Or is this referring more to bait stations?

I’ll probably be calling down there to ask some more specific questions but figured I’d here what you had to say.

When I lived down there you had to go to game wardens district office to buy trapping licenses. They’d been a few years now.

Yes, you can snare and set bodygrips on private land with no restrictions other than you must be 100 feet from the road. And they must be tagged with your license number.

You can use bait, but it must be a piece of bait the size of a golf ball or smaller.

You need Cites tags in every state. They cost $1.29 for five tags. Here is list of places where you can buy them.

CITES Tags are sold ONLY at the following MDWFP Locations:
 Jackson Office (License Dept.) (Jackson, MS) (601) 432-2055
 North Region Office (Enid, MS) (662) 563-6222
 Central Region Office (Canton, MS) (601) 859-3421
 South Region Office (Magnolia, MS) (601) 783-2911
 Buccaneer State Park (Waveland, MS) (228) 467-3822
 Clarkco State Park (Quitman, MS) (601) 776-6651
 Hugh White State Park (Grenada, MS) (662) 226-4934
 J. P. Coleman State Park (Iuka, MS) (662) 423-6515
 John Kyle State Park (Sardis, MS) (662) 487-1345
 Legion State Park (Louisville, MS) (662) 773-8323
