It's a good Idea before things happen, to wire chicken wire to the outside or-and inside of chain link Been living here for over 20 years with no problems from weasels and mink.

Bruce: Nice pen, but is it adequate to keep predators out?

Bruce: Nice pen, but is it adequate to keep predators out? The only problems I have ever had is coons and skunks and for birds ,owls at night time so I close them in at night.

We ordered our chicks for this May today from Hoovers. 5 each of Rhode Island Red, Sapphire Gem and Delaware. The current batch of layers is on their third winter which we will not do again with additional layers. 2 winters will be it.

Yup….our roost is also a 2x4 ….so the birds can roost comfortably on the flat surface. And the both roosts are exactly the same height…keeps every bird on the same playing field …and no bullies around…lol

I have the roost that my grandad made when I was a kid. I went up to the farm which is literally right up the road and went into the chicken house.
It has 4 roots at 8 ft long. The roosts are actually poles cut from the woods like you'd use for bean poles. I also have a feed trough he made that I use.
I fell close to him when I'm with my chickens.
He used to bring me a setting hen every spring and id wait and wait for her to hatch out her buddies.
I actually have a good up chair in my chicken house.
I know I'm a bit nuts but i go out and set in the hen house with my ladies about every evening.
Thats why I have so many of them.
The ones ive raised from chicks all have their own personalities like people.lol.. And it'd be like gettin rid of one of my kids or dogs.
