I change breeds almost always every 2 years so I always have young good layers.
This year I chose 2 new breeds, but still ordered 3 Saphire Gems because I really liked the 3 I have.
...when the new Chick's grow and start laying I advertise the older but still young flock and sell them for layers, or Soup. Usually the Asians around here buy them Quick.
Pays for my new Chick's that way. wink

I sell my 2.5 year old hens (or process what doesn't sell), and hatch out or buy replacements. I keep my stock rotated so I have the freshest hens for max egg production. The ISA browns have been good layers for us. We picked up some Sapphire Gems a few weeks ago. I've never heard of them but they are pretty. We will see how they do.

Same here.

My rural king goes to .25 each.

Last year they sold. 4 Silver water troughs full of chicks for 5.00 a trough.

I couldn't believe it.
I'm glad I didn't have the space for them.
Id be in the poor house buying chick starter.

I have. Buff black and lavender Orpington s.
Barred rocks
New hampshires
Rhode island reds
California whites
Sapphire gems
Sapphire splashes
Black astrolorpes
Princess hens
Silver and golden laced wyandotts
Lakenvelders
Blue andalusias
Easter egress
Americans
And. Several farm hatched hybrids.

grin

In my neighborhood I am the crazy chicken lady.

I dont care I love my hens and my roosters.

I get between 75 and 85 eggs as day depending on how many hens are stealing out.

I sell some and give a bunch away.

None of my neighbors or friends have to buy eggs.

As long as I make enough to pay for my feed I'm good with giving them away.

And where we are is rural.
We can't get the 5 and 6 dollars a dozen they bring in some places.

while I have chicken houses my hens are free range and roam everywhere on our property.

They drive Jerry nuts.

They follow me around like dogs.lol

What are you guys getting for 2-1/2 year old hens? I'm considering rotating out my 2 year olds this year and making a change. Debating on listing or taking them to auction.
