I have two necker and two old style wooden handle fleshing knives and I have not used the wooden handle ones since I bought the neckers. I can keep the necker sharp and I can not keep the old style ones sharp.

sure they need to be sharp. How are you going to flesh the neck of the coon if the knife is not sharp?

The difference comes in dollars realized when you present your well put up coon and beaver (with a Necker) and your "so so" put up coon and beaver with the other.
If you are going to put it up (and you should) then put it up right, and use quality fleshing tools to do it.

A "half truth" is still a whole lie.

Sharp as you like it coontrapper. I don't like a shaving sharp edge on a fleshing knife, more of a butcher knife sharp. It will cut the skin on my finger if ran along the edge a couple onches but will not shave hair. Just starting you might want it a little duller then that untill you get the feel of the knife.

Part of a good put up is the person putting it up. I've seen real nice put up fur from old draw knives, ground pieces of steel, butcher knives, and the cheap fleshing knives. A cheaper knife requires touching up of the edge more often. A lot of it is what you get used to using and fell comfortable with. You must know your fleshing knife to be able to use it properly. There are better knives out there than the necker and there are worse. I started with a cheap knife then switched to a necker. I actually felt more comfprtable with the cheap knife. I since sold the necker and bought a POST. I prefer it over a necker.

yote skinner is right on the money, but if you do buy a necker take into consideration that unlike a cheap knif it is very very hard steel, and that means lots of work to get the thing just right when sharpening, so when you go to buy one dont order it , buy one at a convention so you can look it over real well, make darn sure it has at least had a edge put on it on the bowed out side as many did not several years back, be aware that they do not come with so fine a edge as some of these guys have purchased as theirs may be alot older models, and most important hold it straight out from you and look towards a well lit area as you sight along the bowed out edge, if it has waves in it dont buy it, complain to the dealer and look at another or keep looking at different tables, those wavy edges will cut holes in the coon necks if you dont memorize where they are and can be real difficult to work out of a knife that is so hard, necker knives needs to raise the price 20 to 40 bucks and get the quality back in them instead of mass selling them and sitting on the success of their past top quality knives, so look for yourself, dont just go by what others have said as they may not have got a hold of a poor one.

Good points possum. Mine didn't come with any sharpness and it did have some waving. Took a lot of file and stone work to get it where I wanted it. Buying one in hand instead of over the net would have saved a bunch of time.

I'm with yoteskinner, I still have my necker but usually use the old 2 handle wood knife.
