I would say you did real well. Look the model of Lyman rear sight up. It could be worth more than you gave for the gun. I can not make it out for sure or I would have. That should be a real shooter.

I've spent the past 3 months looking for something similar. I grew up with a close cousin.....a Rem 510 single shot. It still exists at the farm, but is being used there by a nephew as a dispatch weapon. Just handed him 2 boxes of shorts a week ago.
No local pawn shops or gun stores have anything remotely like that. Only ones I could find were on GunBroker. Prices for the 510, 511 or 512 from $200....rough, damaged or missing parts.....to $350+ for the really nice ones. Eventually gave up and got a new Ruger American 8301.
So I should have got a Savage instead? I catually have a 510 target master I need to get to work on, was left in the woods for a few months and the sock is termite ate and it needs a new barrel as the old one was full of water and rust. Dang thing can still group clover leave at 15yd just no where near where you point the iorn sights

Our old 510 Targetmaster must have been the poor kids version, but was still pretty accurate. On a slow day, no sparrows or starlings.....I could not resist shooting something, so would rest on the side of the barn, and aim at nail heads on a board fence. With a 4X weaver scope, would hit em more often than not. That was at around 40 feet.
When I went to 4H camp, the rifles they used were the same 510. So this 521 must have been the upgrade for the serious shooters? Among other things, much better sights.
BTW, checked and half dozen or more are on GunBroker. Most like yours were $350 and up. Starting bids in the $390 range.

Old military training rifle maybe at one time you could buy rifles through the Civilian Marksmanship Program that might be what the T stands for.

Make sure the throat area of the chamber is cleaned well to remove lead accumulation. I had a really accurate 22 once that lost it's ability to group. I found it was due to a lot of lead building-up in the throat; probably from me firing a lot of shorts and CB caps through it.
