Picked up a roadkill coon and just wondering the best way to hold it for next year? Skin, wrap up well and freeze or freeze whole?

Skin, wrap up and freeze. Do not clean skin it. Leave some fat on the pelt. Roll up fur out with the head and the tail on theninside of the roll.

Why? Did you see the raccoon in person? How do you know it isn't worth skinning?

No I didn't but neither did you.
The average coon brought about $10.00 last season. A coon picked up at this time of the year Is starting to break down so even though I haven't seen It I know fur.

The best way I have found is to skin it and roll it with the fur out. Place in a trash bag and freeze. I have had some in the freezer for two years and when pulled out they were good as the day they were frozen.

I've had some pelts frozen for as many as ten years and never had a problem. Some I had tanned and some I sold. After skinning I just stuff the head and tail inside then roll with no exposed flesh/skin. Put in sealed plastic with as little air as possible. When ready to flesh & stretch just thaw and do it. Never had a problem with coon, fox, coyotes, weasels or beavers. Have also done fisher & marten but only for a few weeks.

I find this thread more about weather the coon Is worth keeping other then how to or should you freeze It for the upcoming selling season. Here In WI It's Illegal to pick up road kills after the season has closed on that particular critter. So that's another thing to take Into consideration when picking up road kills.

No the thread is about what the author asked specifically. He didn’t ask if he should be picking them up right now, he didn’t ask if it was legal, he didn’t ask what people thought it might be worth. Most did a nice job answering the question.

Nope, I was out of the trapping game for about 20 years and could not resist picking up a nice mid winter road kill.

If your going to keep the pelt and not flesh and board it. Turn the fur flesh out a lightly mist with water and turn back fur out. Roll it up tightly and place it in a plastic bag. Myself I do this and then vacuum seal. But picking up a coon this time of the year my guess wont bring you much money next year unless the coon prices double.

Directly from Groenewold's site "never roll pelts when freezing" and "never freeze pelts in plastic". They've handled more pelts than anyone on T man, so its probably good advice.

Fold the head under, and the tail under, and freeze flat. This allows the pelt to freeze evenly, and thaw evenly. Plastic bags can build up condensation, and may lead to freezer burn, and leather damage.

I guess I have been doing it wrong for many, many years. All my fur that is save for the following season is rolled and frozen. I don't have any problems. Just saying...

I freeze mine by hanging in my walkin, then pile up on one side for a few months. The faces will get freezer burned in that short amount of time and makes for a little more work when stretching. My fan is mounted in the ceiling so the air is constantly blowing down on the fur.

Do what beav said, better yet don't even stop this late in season. I freeze fur in plastic grocery bags and leave open so no issues with trapped heat. Not keeping fur in freezer long enough to matter. If keeping over for long period best to get air out and use a sealed bag, heard some guys vacuum seal.
