I somehow managed to hip catch a coyote this weekend, and like you said, what a mess. Like tying to skin a blob of jelly.

When it came to learning to cable canines, the biggest hurdle I had was making sure the loop wasn't to big. It's amazing, especially fox, how they can get those front legs through.

I hip caught a coyote to and It wasn't all that bad. Not as bad as some of those jelly heads. And we can't go any bigger then a 12" loop.

Are you guys in PA allowed to use inline swivels on your snares or do you have to use a one peice CR? It would really reduce the bruising you get. I see nothing in the regulations against using inline swivels and I been using them because it helps to reduce chew outs as well as placing small sticks at the site for them to chew on. Them critters sure can booger up a cable restraint.

We can use an inline swivel, and I do on all my CR's. I still get bruising with hip catches and to a lesser extent if they get one leg through. I've always chocked it up to being a tender area especially the hip/under belly. By far most of my catches are textbook neck.

IMO hip catches are generally from setting unloaded snares to low. x2 too low is a big problem. I wouldn't set a snare lower than 10" off the ground for fox. Want to hit them right under the chin.

Same here, I told the young fellow that brought me the fox that swivels are cheap and to raise his loop up a little more.

IMO hip catches are generally from setting unloaded snares to low. X2 and the loop is bigger than 8 inches. In tight cover try 6 inch loops at 10 inches from the walking surface. Reds are more agile than they are given credit for, greys are more so.
Common sense catches alot of fur.. Pay homage to all you harvest..

I set all snares at jackpots no bigger than 7 in loop and no higher than 6 in off the ground for cats and fox.Trail sets higher.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
