Mine is 12 foot from the floor to the top pulley with a hand winch designed for boat trailers mounted to a 4x4 anchored to the cement. With some coyotes I need another foot. Late Bite only catches pups LOL
Common sense catches alot of fur.. Pay homage to all you harvest..

You only need about 7 foot of head room to skin a coyote If you build your skinner right. And I'm not talking about re adjusting the hide a few times.
You need to build your base and attach the winch to the base. Then adapt a length of shafting to the winch shaft. You will need to get rid of the cable drum to do this. The other end of the shaft needs to be held In pillow block. Now you drill a hole In the center of the shaft so you can attach a length of belting. Old seat belts work good for this application. On the other end of the seat belt you attach a cable slip noose. Use the male end of the belt to do this. Now when you open your coyote you just slip the loop around the tail and all the skirt fur and tighten up the noose.
Now when your skinning your winch shaft Is turning and wrapping the hide around the shaft and the carcass Is staying In place. 7' max Is all you need and you could probably get by with 6'. To remove the hide just reverse your winch and off It comes.
It works like a dream I'm sure ADC will have them on the market for next trapping season.
I hope this helps you guys out.
Just a after thought.
You will need to do some bending to finish off the head. So If you hang the coyote by the hocks you will gain some carcass height. Lol beav where you in a cattle kill plant , that is exactly how the hide pullers work there , except a bigger drum the a coon or coyote skinner would take

I haven't used Mine for several years and I've cut up the stand for other uses. But I do have the winch and the shaft and the base of the stand. I'll try and get some pics.

I decided to use one of the tall 6x6 post and build an arm off of it to hold the winch. That will give me 15' to the floor. You'll like that. If you hang the hoist that high you won't be able to reach the hand control though, so you'll need to address that if you go electric. You can extend the cable on it, or add a foot pedal, or mount the hoist lower and run the cable up through a pulley. Mine is 12 foot from the floor to the top pulley with a hand winch designed for boat trailers mounted to a 4x4 anchored to the cement. With some coyotes I need another foot. Late Bite only catches pups LOL Do you have any trouble pulling the skin with a hand crank winch ? -Thanks I always tell people if you have a hand crank winch, use it but if you have to buy one you're better off putting that money towards an electric hoist in the beginning, rather than upgrading later on. The cheapest hand cranks are 1/4 to 1/3 of the cost of electric.

I just can't get my head wrapped around the reasoning why some trappers hang the winch In the over head position. It's so much easier to mount It on the base. And hang a snatch block In the rafters.

How do you keep your winch clean? My skinning base is flat out nasty 1/4 way through the season, while my winch mounted in the rafters is nice and clean. At the end of the season I un-bolt my base from the floor and pressure wash it, I doubt I could do that with the electric winch.

How many times have you asked and I answered that Beav? lol I know I have answered it at least three times over my time here. Keeping it clean, having the hand control hang perfectly handy, space savings, the hoists are designed to be hung from square tube, etc...

I didn't try to take photos to show why, but this will give you an idea. Start of season: A few days later: A few weeks later, not a good photo but you can see the blood & guts starting to build up down low. I guess it depends on if you do a few or do a few every day:

Throw a card board box over the winch. My winch Is mounted to a piece of square tubing that slides over the main mast. It's set at about 4' off the ground.

Note how open my setup is, nothing in the way base to winch. For outdoor work, who cares (note the garbage bag):

Maybe I'm too dense to understand, but please explain how that is easier than just permanently mounting it into the rafters? By having it mounted overhead I also have the added benefit of being able to use the winch to load/unload heavy stuff on or off my truck. You can't back underneath a winch that's mounted to the floor.

When I had my mast built, I had the bottom shaped like an L with a 45 degree brace, pretty much the same as the top. I mounted my base with the clamps on the L at the bottom and hung my winch on the top. I did have to extend the wires on the hand control. I bolted the upright to the wall. To keep the floor from being a mess, I put down a large piece of cardboard to catch the drippings. At the end of the season, I take up the nasty and replace it before the next season. My son works at a body shop and they have plenty of big cardboard boxes.

I drape a section of newspaper over base cross piece to keep clean. I replace as need. I mounted hoist overhead. The highest peak in the roof joist. I did extend the control cord. 2" pipe from a local fire sprinkler installer. I remove base from floor to open up the area, in the off season. In the off season, I found that I use the hoist for other projects. I love it up there, out of the way.

Well It seems to me when you mount the winch In the rafters you have to secure your base to the floor. With the winch secured to the base you can move that puller any where you want It. And your loading and un loading comment dosen't hold water. My gambrel set up rides up and down the mast and It sticks out about 18" so I can back the truck right up to the mast and load or un load as I see fit. And of coarse I can take It outside and load or un load as I see fit. There are lots of ways of doing things It's just how much you think out of the box Is what matters. Hey Boone I use to use a 10" butterfly valve. But then I went to using a slip noose.
