BOARD SIZES

This diagram illustrates how you should read the board size measurements. The first number is the lenght and the second number is the width. In this example, at two inches from the tip of the board, the width should measure three inches. At six inches from the tip of the board, the width should measure 5 inches, and so on. The board thickness varies from 3/8" to 1/2", depending on what size board you are making. The smaller boards such as muskrat and weasel will be 3/8" while larger boards such as fox and otter will be 1/2".

The board sizes for all other species are listed below.

I like the half inch for coon, thinner has a tendency to split if handled rough.

I have some that are 3/4 and they seem to work fine.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

With 3/4" on the coon that are borderline you could loose that next size. 1/2" IMO is better.
If you look at wire stretchers they are only 1/4" or less.

I look at this way - difference between 3/8" & 5/8" is 1/4". On a hide that's 28", that's 7 sq. in. on 1 edge, or 14 sq. in. total...14 sq. in. has to go somewhere = longer pelt.

I forgot to mention as well that it makes a difference as well if you round the edges of your boards.
Easier to slide dried pelts off and gives you a rounder edge on the dried pelt rather than a sharp squre edge.
