Well, this year im going to heat my trap shed. There is no electricity out there. I was thinking of putting in a little wood stove or kerosene heater. Whats your opinion?

I sure wouldn't go kerosene. Anything in that shed will wreak like kerosene and could take on a discoloration. sure can't see a downfall to wood heat.

We use Kerosene on winter warfare exercises, and if the building your trying to heat is not extremely well ventilated you get tent eye, eyes swell up and go bloodshot, not pleasant. Better off with a samll woddstove, probly even cheaper in the long run.

I like the wood stove for mine. At orschelns you can find the kit to convert a barrel into a wood stove. That makes a good cheap wood burner. I also use it as a place to dispose of my old motor oil. I store it through the summer in old laundry soap containers, then pour a cup on the fire when I add wood, or if I want a surge of heat I add some oil. It is also good for burning coon fat for a little extra heat once in a while. The drawback is cutting firewood. If you watch construction sites you can find old lumber that they throw away. Lumber does not burn long and hot like some hardwoods, but it works for an evening working, and it is free.

I would run electric out there, even just a high quality extension cord then a old gas furnace converted to propane w/propane tank outside. electric to run fan/blower. just because I don't like wasting time starting a fire then letting it warm up then working on things and keeping it warm enough in there for proper pelt drying. get a thermostat and set it at 60 degrees and forget it,perfect for fur drying and comfortable to work in. With wood you either have to spend your time cutting wood or buy it already cut,so cost evens out.

Watch the Classified ads for woodstoves. Around here there is 2-3 in there every week. But you gotta be quick to call these days.

Wood is the only way to go IMHO. wink

Go to the Mother Earth site and look at that waste oil heater they have. Looks good to me and no chopping.

I bought a small pellet stove thats made for use in a tent cost 275 heats my 20 by 24 shed great even on the coldest winter days can get it hot enough to just have a T shirt on.

P.S also has a small oven built in for cooking up those quick meals between work.

I got a 220V electric baseboard heater (5' long) for my shed and I can regulate the temp perfectly and it is a good dry heat with no possiblility of carbon monoxide poisoning. Not to mention, it is maintenance free and cheap running! The heated area of my fur shed is 12' X 16' so it's not a huge area. I originally wired it for 2 heaters but one is plenty in my well insulated shed.

My bad, I didn't see your lack of electricity problem. I could not live without electricity in my shed. Lights, heat, electric stapler, radio, etc.. You need to run a wire!!!!

Great opinions guys, I was leaning towards wood as that is what I heat my house with anyway, have tons of it and I already have another small woodstove. I am glad to get all the responses. I beleive I will install my little wood stove.. Thanks again to all of you for your help.

Not too hard. With th kit you just cut the holes for the door and chimney. I am not sure if the kits require welding or if they bolt in. I made my own so it is a little more work. Pretty easy though.
