Deerhunter, That is frosting on this cake. Got any photos of that "cake" catch with candles? Cool!

Just curious - ever catch anything that looked like a Rat Terrier? The reason that I ask is, if you had sets in Ohio, do you know own Ohbuyer's Terrier for a lap dog?

I caught coon skunks and possum in it. But never a dog or a cat. Never a rat terrier! LOL The trap is short chained and set using a earth anchor. If set like this they cant take the can completely out of the hole. Thus keeping them from chewing. The trap i used in the set was a sleepy creek double jaw number 1 coil spring trap. I forgot to add that bit in the picture set.

One way to make the can harder to dig up might be to attach some legs to the sides of the can so it will be anchored a bit deeper.
Huntinglonewolf did this with Coon Cuffs to help eleminate the dig up by raccoon.
I have a bunch of little traps that need a hole to set in. Jonathan is right about being condiderably cheaper. My wife drinks coffee by the gallon and I get a pile of can.
Now a few will be put to use. This is worth a try for sure.

Now that would be a good way to recycle some old saw blades. And if they have any number 1 coils hanging in the shed i would put them to use.

I had always thought that the larger teeth of a ripping blade significantly increased the relative holding power of the anchor over that of a finishing blade. I have no proof - might have all been imaginary. No matter, they worked. I favored the tie plates for raccoon because of the extra weight.

I have used a many tie plate for coon. They hold exceptionally well when in a sanding or muddy bottom.

Even when a big boar coon manages to wiggle a tie out, and the plate serves as a drag, I've never had one go very far from the set site before getting hung up with it - either back in the bottom mud, or in some debris to entangle the plate.

Using them on a regular basis was a young man's sport. Lugging them in to stash along the line for later use was a chore, especially with limited access to the water was restricted to getting there only by land. Being able to work out of a canoe or duck skiff simplified using them more often.

Cable stakes changed all of that part.

You got that right. There was never a good way to haul more than 3 or 4 at a time. After setting your water line with them you were ready for the season to be over. LOL
