I am making up some coon bait for the bush pens I have build to snare from and was wonderind if asotefeidia has any affect on coons. I am grinding crawdads with a touch of anise oil and thought of adding asotefeidia to try to get the yotes to run through and get snared. Thanks for info. Cody

Oh Dave you got to tell us more about the taste testing LOL
Good tip though!
Sorry I missed you at the NTA- want to talk about baits and lure with you.

I hope to snare them before they can taste the bait. I am mainly looking for scents to draw them through the snares.

I wouldnt suggest using any type of lure ingredients in a bait. Most lure ingredients are synthetic and arent something a coon wants to readily eat. A bait needs to taste good to the coon. Even ingredients like shellfish are synthetic and have a nasty, acrid taste. I know because a friend of mine and I tasted several lure ingredients one time (not recommended) and trust me they tasted nasty with a capital N. DISCLAIMER- im no lure maker....... Having said that, isnt the whole idea to catch the coon BEFORE he eats the bait? or at least awfully close to before? IMO, i want something that SMELLS like food, then cacth him before he can decide it doesnt taste good.

would mashed mullberries be good in a bait? i have a tree full of them that the coons are all over during the summer but fall comes and all the berries are gone. could these be made into a bait now and used this fall/winter? kinda like a jelly?
or what would you suggest? i think makin my own bait/lure sounds like fun.

Havent run accross to many chemically produced substances in dumpsters that coon have been readily feeding on. That is what 90% of lure ingredients are derived from. No where did I say that coon werent attracted to lure or shellfish but a bait with lure ingredients is no longer a bait but instead becomes a lure. There are many situations where a bait that the coon will readily eat is important. Take the griz trap for instance. The coon will get some of the attractor out of the trap and eat it most times before being caught. Use something in the trap that a coon doent like to eat and he will be gone after that first taste. I highly doubt that a coon enjoys the flavor of kerosene or gasoline and that is what many lure ingredients taste like which makes sense since some are petrolium based. If your catching every coon before he eats the bait why are you using bait?
