On boar coon I've alway made my window from the penis hole, out slightly and down. In the FFG artcicle I noticed that it was recommended to start the cut further down below the penis hole. What do you think?

I've asked this question of many trappers, and the subject came up dozens of times last season. You'll get many answers about the window. Everybody has their own way of doing it, and the most important thing seems to be consistency with your work. All your pelts should look uniform. When you decide on a way to do it, on the carcass/off the carcass, and x high or y high, stick with it.

Does the fur industry actually use the thin, coarse hair around the genitals? Probably not.

I myself cut just above the penis hole, we're talking millimeters above the hole, not a huge distance. I'm no expert, but so far, nobody has pointed at them and said "that's wrong."

I'd also like to know what the general consensus is, but if the replies are anything like last seasons, there won't be a general consensus.

if skinned properly the window will only need slight trimming after the pelt is on the board. at this point is where i trim away the penis opening.

I'm no expert, last year was the first year I put up my own fur, after the auction, I talked to a buyer who got my coon and asked him to give me tips, what I could have done better and so on. He told me with what coon is doing now that alot don't want windows, he said "Them Greek will wear anything", I guess they do use that fur too.

If you skin and board them correctly, you don't need to cut a window. Notice, I said BOARD.

Cut them how your fur buyer wants them.

I buy them either way, both look good. On wire strechers i will usually cut at the hole but on boards you wouldn't have to. On wire its more important to leave as much of the flank on as possible.People have a tendency to over cut the width using wire.
