Let's suppose a person acquired a large supply of rail road plates. How would you utilize them on the trap line?

Drowning weights for trapping is a great use for railroad plates. We used a railroad plate as an anvil, when we were kids.

They seem to be commonly found on wires leading into deep water, often several to a wire.

Bottom edge sets. Put a bodygrip clip on it, set your trap

CTRAPS, park the truck and go for a walk on a set of tracks you plan on trapping...they are there. Bring some wire and rig two or more together...great drowning weighs.

Buddy made self standing 330 holders out of them just set it in the bottom of a run and stake it down.

Go see the section foreman and tell him you will buy him and the boys a case of beer if they deliver some to the crossing.
Theoretically of course.
Cracked or broken angle bars are good for lots of things on the trapline also.So are cropped pieces of rail.
Anybody that works on the railroad can get you that stuff.
The railyards used to sell stuff like that real cheap to anyone from their scrap piles.Used ties would go for a dollar a piece.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Freedom Brand sells a piece that can be welded onto a plate to hold their DP. I'm sure something can done for other brands.

Around here sightings are done by independent contractors so you may be able to find stuff though them and not just the main line RR guys such as Union Pacific or Canadian National.

If you can't find RR plates what about a old truck rotor and weld a pipe in the middle.

Years back when I trapped coon heavily I used RR plates for drags with a 1 1/2 coil wired to it.

well if you purchased them from the scrapper who purchased the load of scrap iron , then you can be less theoretical about all this

The old government trapper that taught me to trap coyotes back in the mid 70s used them for coyote drags

I'll do that. I've found some, but it's been a couple of years since that happened.  Thank you.

We backed up to a pile of tie plates and loaded them up. Next day the sheriff was at the house and we took them back.

if there is a name in the casting, they are still under the railways ownership
and 99% have that name cast in them

Railroad bridge south of town over a small river. When the waters low in the summer there’s piles of them in the mud.
