I have never seen a door that opens with a heat register in the middle of the opening.

Its the condensation from the air vent that is not fitted to the duct at the floor. It's coming out under the carpet. The house needs a humidifier and tighten up the fitment of the vent cover.

Is there a possibility that it might be wool carpeting? If so, maybe it's dermestid beetles Not wool, I would have smelled it

wool carpet and backing of synthetic material = carpet beetles you can see some of the other area fiber is missing It's not wool, wool gives off an odor when wet, it's either sun damage or moisture like Clayton said I think

Why would sun damage only effect the first three inches of carpet. Being close to the door frame has to have something to do with it and moisture would surely be a safe guess right? Try lighting a fire with a magnifier got to have the angle right
