Called for killing frost between 12:00 a.m. and 10:am so im out watering my 3rd yr white peach tree to warm it up as its only bearing 3 yrs and had more blooms than ever. White peaches have a hard time in my climate....its about 30 degrees now. I built a temporary shelter for my dwarf peach, I put a heat lamp in it when winter temperature was supposed to get more than -25

Peaches are self fertile but the pollen grains that attach to the stigma send a tiny tube down the stigma into the ovule. This process is temperature dependent and very cold or freezing temps arrest the process or cause pollination to fail completely. In the west I've never heard of anybody using irrigation to assist peach or cherry bloom during freezing temps, but smudge pots and wind machines are very common. Especially wind machines in modern times.
White peaches are generally preferred by asians. They are sub-acid so appear to be sweeter than yellow peaches. I used to grow 5 different varieties of whites: IN ripening order: 'Sno-Brite', 'White Lady', 'Sugar Giant', 'Gum', and 'Snow King'.

keith it blossomed about 8-10 days ago.....looks like baby peaches and stipules on it with the baby peaches the size of a match head. My peaches, nectarines and plums are just slightly bigger than yours. My pears are about 1/2" now. At 28F about 10% of newly formed peaches are supposed to die. It doesn't look like I have any frost damage. My apples and cherries are finishing up blooming now. I've seen very few bees this year, so I don't know how good of a fruit set I'll get. It does look like I'll get at least some of everything. I have some trees that are almost always reliable. Peaches, plums and nectarines are unreliable here. Some of my pear and apple trees always produce well, almost to well. I hope you have a good fruit year. Keith

Carl, you always have interesting varieties, I've often not heard of. Keith

Carl, you always have interesting varieties, I've often not heard of. Keith My pear tree(only one left) has been doing huge for the last 3 yrs. Im figuring it is going to die soon. It was here and very large when I bought the place in 93. At that time the peaches werent large or good. Now they are larger...not large and always good. Although I did have a bartlet here that I know was at least 60 yrs old because a guy i knew had lived here around 80 yrs ago and had it. The thieves cut it down while i was in Asia.

Most of the whites I got were from Dave Wilson Nursery in California and were developed by Zaiger genetics. (Zaiger was one heck of a plant breeder). Anymore Dave Wilson is hard to do business with so good luck with that.
'Gum' peach was bred locally by a friend of mine now passed on. He crossed a Hale peach with some obscure old time white he had and got a better peach. His name was Stewart Gum and I think he called it 'pineapple peach' because it was so heavily scented like a tropical fruit. After he passed I renamed it 'Gum' peach in his honor. I had several trees I grafted into my orchard but about 10 years ago I tore out my whole orchard and lost the variety for good. I think I might have had the last of those genetics.

For me the bugaboo was brown rot/blossom blight with western Oregon's rainy springs. But I had a good run and we still have customers crying about not getting our peaches and nectarines any longer.
