Thought this was neat. Seems to work pretty well as he catches a lot of monsters with this. Said ty use this they of stuff for marlin a lot salt water side and reminds of the hair rigs they use all for carp. Gonna fool around with this when I get back on the boat because them dang gaftops and hard heads seem to swallow any dang hook smirk I know about anything I've ever caught using a similar ring is always corner or lip caught

I believe that gar rig is for gut hooking. A gar's face is harder than a hook.
When I fish for them on purpose I open the bail once they pick up the bait and wait for them come to a stop and watch for the line to twitch and then remain still for a bit, then wait for it to slowly swim off. No need to set the hook. It's in his gullet.

If we use Jigs baited with night crawlers fishing for bullheads they swallow the hook much less often.

It may help with your hook issues.

According to him absolute opposite. Doesn't want to gut hook them at all
