Fact of the matter is, doesn't matter if there are 1,200 wolves, 10,000 wolves, or 100,000 wolves in Wisconsin. Until they're removed from the ESL, nothing can be done about them (legally). Maybe we just need to grin and bear it until they eat themselves out of food and the pendulum can swing the other way.

Very interesting commentary. Parallels the views and observations of many that live and hunt here in the northwoods. Wolves are very common nowadays but that is an inconvenient truth to those that count them and supposedly manage them. Federal judges that rule through emotion and not biological principles help nobody ultimately. Sad state of affairs IMO.

Good article, Muskrat. Thanks! In my mind the fact he is managing and closely observing such a huge tract of land lends a lot of validity to his comments.

I feel his pain but like others have said it's legislators and federal judges screwing us on wolves not the dnr. Lets focus on the right enemy here.

States have no problem ignoring federal laws on marijuana but wolves on the Endangered list is gospel. Open a state season and let the feds try to enforce their laws.

If Wis.has 10,000 wolves how many does Mn.have, 20,000 ? more? What he has found on his property we have found on ours. How do you disarm an army of deer hunters, take away their prey.

Isn't this what Wyoming did? Essentially forced the Feds hands and got wolves off the ESA in the West.

Yep, that is essiantally what Wyoming did. Unlike the other states they never buckled under to the Feds. For a while there wolves were classified as a varmint by Wyoming state (they still are in most of the state) while being protected by the Feds. Much like the Federal immigration laws, state law enforcement officers were forbidden from enforcing Federal law and state law classified them as varmints. So only Federal law enforcement could enforce the Federal law. State game wardens were instructed to ignore anybody harvesting wolves.

I don't live in Wisconsin, but if I recall correctly the last time Wisconsin had a wolf season the DNR refused to open one until a judge forced them to. Yes federal judges and the legislatures are a big problem, but according to friends I have there the DNR is also pro wolf and anti harvest.

Our WDNR staff generally is not anti harvest. Our governor seems to be though.

Yes but the Wyoming political sphere is heads and tails above most other states in common sense, particularly above Minnesota. Barring the Cheney clan of course.
I find it interesting I believe Wyoming was on the forefront of women’s right to vote but yet don’t have the overwhelming liberal bias women bring to other state’s constituency’s.

Not so sure about who voted him in. The majority of the state is red according to the map. A couple counties control the outcome every time. The two biggest ones are city people and liberal tree huggers.

I get the WON and read the article last when the paper arrived. I feel the writer did a very credible job of showing how the population over the area they manage has changed over the last decades. nearly 5 square miles adds to that credibility in my opinon. However to me stating that there are over 10,000 wolves in WI discredits much of the good info. Many state that wolves kill 40 deer per year so that would indicate that up to 400,000 deer per year are killed by just wolves, not county bear, coyote, bobcat, automobiles and the over 300K we hunters take. I dought seriously that nearly 800K deer are killed each year in WI if not more.

Bryce

You use the three S when you deal with the wolves.
