I have a love hate relationship with public ranges. Nice to be able to go and shoot when I'm alone but the people tend to make it or break it for me. Have had everything from really nice conversations to dealing with guys trying to shoot a rap video while mag dumping their mini Dracos and flailing around with Glocks and sks's tired and no I'm not even joking. It I. General I try to go there only if I really need to or if I'm pretty sure it will be empty

Took the Grendel out today ,had like 23rd with of 90gr Speer TNT'd loaded behind some LT-30 I want to try really quick..was empty so decided to try and get prone . Got my mat set up , Chrono on checked to see if I was on paper @50yd then moved out to 100yd. Love prone so much more then bench. Well I get done with my string. Go to reload and hear some footsteps look over and there's this kid , couldn't have been older then ten just staring at me all wide eyed and he's holding a S&W 15-22 bone stock . I look at him he looks at me and he's mom walks up with a bag full of cans and we get to talking. Apparently the kid loves shooting but his dad works so much he can't really get out with him and since all his classmates deer hunt and stuff she wanted to make sure he wouldn't be too far behind, apparently the gun was his Christmas present.

Well he starts asking all about my gun , the bullet the magneto speed attached to it the bipod why it's painted and not juat black , he really seemed to like that cool ect. Asked him if he shot his a bunch and if he wanted some help and he was all game. Mom said she don't know a ton about guns past the basics but she was really happy for the help.Put him out a paper target on a box at 10yd . Showed him how to adjust the stock and look though the scope properly run the safety and all .....had to get a lil stern when it came to muzzle awareness but at least he knew to put it back on safe. Didn't really seem to understand the whole deal of no looking over the scope as soon as he pulled the trigger ( about wanted to duct tape his head to the stock laugh ) though but was able to hit his beer can a few times off hand. Kid was beyond happy and said he was gonna take his can hole to show to his dad smile really wish I had brought my .22lr and let him shoot them or at least been able to let him eat a few dozen rounds, kid only had about 20rd to shoot frown but his smile definitely made it worth the lil extra 45 min added to my range trip

Wolfie…I think you are missing a calling…I feel there is a coach inside you…you seem to relate well to youngsters.

4-H Youth Development Through Shooting Sports is where you belong Wolfie. With your current work schedule it would be difficult to spend a lot of time with them, but any time spent there would be beneficial to the kids and to you. I was involved with it for 10 years, the last 3 years was after my kid aged out. I still miss it.
Over the past 16 years I have been training bigger kids how to do the same thing with bigger guns for much different purposes. While I thoroughly enjoy that, I still miss working with little kids. They listen better, they didn't come to me with bad habits to unlearn, and they told me how much they thoroughly enjoyed what I did for them.

Thank you! Your the man! Great to deal with good kids. I used to run the cane pole fishing derby for the new fishermen here but ran out of help and getting sort of old now.......jk

wolfie should take the nephew and get involved in the 4-H air rifle is a great start

We had 22 pistol shoot yesterday.

your work schedule might have you away or it might have you there , when your off the boat your off the boat and not trying to work 45-50 every week.

and yes young lads who don't get instruction early really want to see the bullet hit the target.

Wolfie…check with your local American Legion…they may sponsor an air rifle program or at least point you in the right direction…but, don’t try to do it all yourself…I really think you have a lot to pass on to our youth.

Fantastic job!!
You won’t hear from the loud mouth pumpkin guy on this topic. Unless he does it to prove me wrong. Hope you exchange contact information. Set up a day to meet him with your stuff. Friend for life. Some day you will be old and he might help you with something

I'm actually not even sure where to start when it comes to that. I know it's super common in most places but I honestly never even heard of it till a few years back on here

Your county should have a local ag extension office funded by the state…start there.

yup call your county extension office and see about getting the nephew started and you go take the training.

4-H leaders have to do a local youth protection training , then a state discipline specific training , then background check.

it isn't hard and it is fun and you learn better ways to teach shooting to kids.

I was a hunter ed instructor for years, sorta miss it. Once in a while you have a kid that makes it all worth while. I had a girl that wanted to bow hunt but had to pass the test. Her parents were with her the whole class. She had been involved in the Thurston high school shooting and hated guns. Oregon requires you to shoot 10 rounds I think it was. So come range day she is sweating bullets. I take my time, we go back over all the features of the gun, I chose a Ruger mk2 for her. 10 inch barrel deadly accurate. Once she fires , she’s not dead? What fires all 10 rounds even hits the target a few times. Before the rest of the kids where done, I like to let them shoot a lot, she taps me on the shoulder and ask if she can shoot again. Her dad had tears in his eyes, never thought she would get past the school shooting. And for that Kip Kinkle the shooter at the school they still want to figure out how to get him out. Lib-tards

I agree with the 4H shooting sports, I am the shooting sports coach for our county, it is so rewarding to watch these young people come into the program and watch how much they grow in maturity and personal responsibility through being held accountable and yet being allowed to excel while they are on the range. Not to mention when that light comes on and they truly get it and they go from a student who has learned how to safely handle a rifle to a student who knows how to safely handle a rifle and is on the road to being able to use the rifle very effectively.

My son shot 4-H trap shooting last year and built his confidence wing shooting. He had exposure to shooting and .22 and deer rifles but not much shotgun. The older guys at our county were a tremendous asset to him and built him up. I as his father found it more difficult to teach just my son as my bad shotgun habits are learned and I never really learned the "proper" way to shoot but just built up my own confidence over time. After rounds and rounds of trap - my son gained confidence and proved it in the dove field this last fall. I accredit it mostly to the older guys slowing down and showing him pointers of shooting. It meant tons to me as his father as I knew most these guys knew much more about trapshooting than I did.
