I spoke with a local beef producer the other day and he was asking $3.00 per pound hanigng weight for his beef. This is what I don't get. I got $2.90 just dropping them off, I don't see how it's worth an extra dime to sell the quarters, track down payments, call after checks bounce and chase down money. One check bounces and the hassle far outweighs the extra $70 you made on that beef. I'm at $3.75 hanging to sell quarters and sometimes I debate if that's worth it.

I'm not sure what the guy's input costs were, but I'm sure he wasn't getting rich off the deal. Based on what we've paid in the past, I thought $3 was high. This may have been a mistake on our part, but we decided to wait and see what the market does with beef. I will say that even at $3 per pound plus the processing fee, it's still probably far cheaper (and of better quality) than what a person might pay at a grocery store.

Most replies here don’t seem to understand the question. $1.67/lb is on the low end of market price for fat cattle. But without knowing what the animal is, its impossible to know if you’re getting a deal or ripped off. Guess he wont know that till he starts chewin.

I’d say upstate and m.magis pretty well answered the question.

I've had plenty of "cheap" beef. Never had a good, cheap, beef steak. It's one or the other, never both.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I didn't see the animal, it's from a family at our church that raises steers. I do know the live weight was 1600#. That is a giant animal for a butcher beef.

I'd like to see that 1,600# Steer.
Likely a silage fed holstein, if so it will be good meat. I like those silage feds.
