We are purchasing a quarter of beef for the first time. The live weight price is $1.67 a pound delivered to the butcher. Is that a good price? Central PA.

I don't thunk that's bad. What's the total after butcher these days for a quarter?

That's a steal unless it's a sick, boney, 14 year old cow.

Here's the slip from two I just sold. 1.67 is just above cull cow price.

Just about anything is better than super market prices. Wow I'm glad we raise our own and have a freezer full. All done cut wrapped froze we got $4.00/lb last year. Processing kills a guy. And there booked a year out.. Beef calves sold for $990.00 Monday locally.

Your right . I read question wrong . If fed out - $1.67# live is a fair price for buyer

We have switched to raising roasting chickens every other year and buying more pork when on specials. If the Great Plains continues to stay dry we will have a shorter beef supply. The dairy industry is now breeding over a million cows or more per year to beef bulls and that will help stabalize the fat cattle market a bit. Neighboring farmers ared getting 500-900 dollars for Holstein beef cross calves right now.
