I thought CJD was from cannibalism. First found in cannibals of Papua New Guinea.

my aunt died of CJD she nor her husband ever deer hunted , they lived in north west Georgia since the 80s.
he was born in Scotland but came here as a small kid with his parents , so really her only exposure would have been in the UK in the late 90s when they went to visit but BSE mad cow a similar prion that can cause CJD would have been mostly under control by the late 90s by the Mad cow time line.
and even at that it didn't start till 2021
the disease starts with memory loss and hedaches. eventually your brain just turns to mush and your boddy fails
it is almost the flip of ALS where the bodies nerves and muscles break down but the mind is trapped unable to move the body.
both randomly occur , for whatever reason , could the prion
if you wanted to go down this road of CWD has to be controlled more than it is I could make a good argument for reducing carrion eating raptor populations to 1980 populations
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I would speculate there are thousands of CWD positive deer consumed each year in Wisconsin alone. From what I've read (which isn't a lot) ......prion-caused diseases can take years to develop in infected critters (sometimes deer won't show any visible ailments until 5 or 6 years old, or older. Not sure about human age. There is some info that relates CWD, CJD, Mad Cow......to Alzheimer's.

That "study" is a joke, and no one should be surprised the only placed it was published was Yahoo. They don't even know if they guy that died ever ate an infected deer. They just assume he did because he's a hunter and a positive deer had been found in that area, though they convenient leave out how many and if they were even wild deer. No longer does the term "study" have any legitimacy, the vast majority that you read about on the internet have a predetermined goal. In this case, it's to scare people from eating deer meat, i.e, keep people from hunting. You "could" be right. But, you "could" be wrong. Life is nothing but decisions we make.

I'm in the same boat as your Swampwolf.
I've read that it would be rare/highly unlikely for a yearling and young deer to have the disease.
I think I will start shooting some yearling/young does for the table and donating anything older. I done some contract work for Ga DNR this past fall collecting lymph nodes from deer. The state had a certain number of samples they wanted (especially from the Florida line counties since that positive in the FL panhandle last year). I had to collect from 3 to 12 deer each from about 8 counties. I didn't meet all the county goals, but did manage to sample more than 30 deer.....mostly from the state line counties. DNR biologist wanted 2.5 and older deer and primarily buck, as they travel more in the fall so they have an increased chance of contracting disease. I collected several 4.5 and 5.5 year old buck samples. Biologist said if a positive is found in GA they will collect 4 or 5 more deer from that area for testing.....then just monitor from that point forward. No wholesale killing or attempted eradication. All samples were frozen, forwarded to biologist and then carried to UGA lab for testing. I've heard nothing since delivering last group of samples back in early February.
