Not the best spot for asparagus but the best spot that I wanted asparagus to grow so I could let it bush out and go to seed. I think you are supposed to let it do that to establish. These are about 30" between two rows and 24" between plants. We moved and I lost the bed I got going at the old house. Any hot tips or tricks? Wish me luck. Thanks for looking.

I can smell my pee already. Lol.

I've tried planting crowns before with not much luck.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

now the wait
I have some crowns that have been in 2 years this is their third year and they are starting to produce well.

had the first crop with supper last night.

my wife hasn't had home grown asparagus in years I just sautéed it in a little butter and she was saying best flavor asparagus ever I think well maybe in a bunch of years since we could get some from my grandmothers patch.

i doubled my patch last year after having the first last year.

doubling again might be in order

We started a good portion of our patch from seed. Fried in bacon grease with a touch of garlic, mmmmm.

Looks awesome. I also have had poor results in getting them to succeed. I have a few small patches of wild asparagus at the ranch that do well. I made the mistake of digging up a bigger patch oof them and tried to relocate them in a better spot and none lived through the replant.

Good Luck I hope you get a bumper crop down the road.

for tips start looking for old or spoiled hay mulch it deep and you will hardly have to water it

asparagus will grow through hay if you aren't laying the cakes on and braking it up loose as you lay it on

most everything else will be smothered out or easy to pull

one exception is quack grass

mulch well whatever you use

for my grandparents it was leaves would bag up the yard and put it on the asparagus patch and get bags of leaved from my parents and set them all around the garden then break them open as what was there broke down and spread them on the asparagus there was a probably a bail of hay or two through the year also

first year let it go let it grow
limited harvest second year
some restraint 3rd year
hopefully 4th year cut all I want

I had good luck on planting them. Had a good patch growing for quite a few years until the last few year when the deer took a liking to them. Not much left anymore. Had to resort to buying them the past couple years.
Best vegetable God ever made.

I think you should get a special Asparagus exception tag I would write you one (it would mean nothing) , to make meat of those deer as they snack on your asparagus.

It seems they ravage my garden just these past two years. I wonder if the drought has something to do with it? Because prior to that, I've never had a problem with the deer. I know it's deer because of the footprints.

I wonder if you had any cattle panel around , and come cinder blocks set blocks and lay panels over the top , if that would slow them down eating your good asparagus

tip the panel off cut a section flip the panel back over onto the blocks
