Has any one seen fresh castor sacks that have big chunks of hard dry castor in them. A beaver I skinned today had half the castor in each sack in big dry chunk. When I broke it apart it just crumbled and was dry.

Yea seen that before,usually they are bigger than a normal softer castor gland.

Yeah, I remember a couple like that, don't know what causes it.

Mineralized castor is something I see in maybe 1 out of 400 beaver. Sometimes it's just partial or sometime both pods. I theorize it could be some sort of duct blockage or infection of some type.

It was both castors and yes they were real full looking ,

It's known as a "Barkstone" Castor.

I had a set this spring that weighed almost 3 pounds !!!

Had 3 sets hard as a rock out of 87 beavs since Thanksgiving.

I've had what looks like chunks of green wood in them, just assumed it was part of the process of making castor.

A buddy of mine found a tiny fetus in a castor gland. It was mummified,

Just pulled out my first set this evening off of a 2 or 3 year old beaver. Haven't cut it opened to take a look at it but just handled it like any other castor.
