Man, what a blessed weekend in the turkey woods! My wife has been after me to take her for awhile now, so this year I decided to dedicate the turkey season to getting her a bird. Little did I know we would get it done on the first day, and shoot a double to boot on her birthday. We also got my brother one on another property the next day. Stories below for those who like to read.

We sat up on some birds I had been watching in a little creek bottom that led to some fields they like to strut in later in the morning. It's a super open creek bottom so hiding is hard. We had to slide further back than I wanted to but we got in a little hedgerow where we had a great hide. At first light we had 2 birds gobbling about 200 yards from us, those were our birds. There was also one gobbling on the other side of the road as well. They flew down about 6:35 and the gobbling stopped. Time went by and broadcast some calls out over the little creek bottom with my trusty glass pot call, no responses. Occasionally they would gobble at crows or geese and it sounded like they were moving further off. I later figured out this was the third bird across the street joining the other two on our side.

Finally I got out the trumpet, and I got a response. They sounded like they were 150 yards away or so. 10 or 15 minutes went by and I hit it again, this time they gobbled and it made your hair stand up - they were close. I see them slipping through the bottom popping strut and boxing eachother out. It was all 3 of them. I had a hen decoy out to give my wife a point of reference. They weren't entirely sold on the decoy. I had it at about 20 yards. They came to about 35 yards and stopped and strutted. Finally, one stepped off to the side and my wife got on him. At 35 yards she mowed him down with her 28 gauge and my handloads.

Instead of flying off, the other two gobblers stuck around. We were hidden so good they had no idea what happened. They stuck around just long enough for my wife to hand me the gun. As they were high heading and starting to putt I put the dot on ones head and sent the tungsten down the barrel. At around 40 yards he was stone dead as well. We couldn't have drawn it up any better and my wife was tickled to death. Her first turkey, a double, and on her birthday. Thank you Lord.

We met up with my buddy who also got it done opening morning and got a picture with all 3

The next day it was my brother's turn. We went to a property that he got permission on but hadn't heard any turkeys on. There are usually turkeys in that area, so I urged him to stick with it. It was my first time ever being there, so we got there early to listen. We heard one gobbling almost immediately and went to that bird. He was roosted on a creek bottom that borders a big field and was gobbling good on the roost. We got within 100 yards and sat down in the corner of the field overlooking the creek bottom. It was a great setup where if he slipped down the creek we could see him or if he came to the field we could still see him.

When he flew down he went dead silent. Didn't gobble at crows or my calls. Wouldn't even gobble at the trumpet. We waited him out for about an hour and decided to drop down to the creek bottom and slide up towards him. We walked about 100 yards and found a tree that looked like the roost tree. Crap on the ground below it everywhere. Walked another 50 yards and there was a beautiful oak hardwood flat leading to the field. I decided to stop here and let out a call with the trumpet. I didn't get halfway through and he cut me off. He was so close I told my brother to sit down immediately. Before we even got sat down I see his hen coming into the woods from the field looking for us. He was right behind her. My brother shot him on the edge of the field coming into the woods. He didn't want anything to do with us when we were 150 yards away, but when we got in his bubble he was fired up. This hunt was the cherry on top for a great opening weekend. Gonna be hard to top this one.

Looks like a great time had by all and some awesome hunts. Nothing quite like hunting turkeys to me.

Outstanding write up and story!! Congrats to you all.

We’re seeing the same thing with our gobblers. We are having to get in their bubble to get a response. I’m not saying they aren’t coming, they just aren’t announcing they’re coming until you or they are within 100yds or even closer.

Nice looking trumpet! Who’s the maker?
