Buddy bought two ATN Thor 4s 2x-8x 384 resolution about a year ago. Took them out of the box and mounted one on a new Ruger American Ranch .300 blackout. Mounted other on a new Tikka .308. Both are bolt guns.

These have been in a gun case since then...never setup or shot.

I now have both charged up and firmware updated. General settings to operate are now set. Just took a look around the back yard with each....getting familiar with the focus of each scope.

Plan on shooting both rifles tommorrow to zero.

For those interested, here is my pros and cons (thus far)...as compared to my AGM Rattler V2 TS35 384.

ATN pros:
*Large wheel knob on side of scope for zooming.
*Control buttons are large & simple.
*More color pallettes to choose from.
*Battery is supposed to last 16 hrs.

ATN cons:
*Battery is internal and non-removable.
*Comes with USB cable, but not the charger.
*Some 2amp+ phone chargers won't work....some will.
*View is not as clear as my AGM.
*Louder audible click when it NUCS.
*Does not come with objective lens cap.
*Scope cover won't fit over scope if eye cup is attached.
*Uses a micro-SD card. No internal storage.
*Thermal sensor doesn't appear to be of same quality as AGM Rattler.

How do they compare in price - $1999 for thor - 300 yard identification range. The battery life is pretty amazing. I am not sure that I wouldnt rather have sd card and just pop it in the computer. These low to mid range scopes provide a difficult choice. Seems like the upper end stuff are all amazing

AGM Rattler TS35 384 is $2495.

ATN Thor4 384 is $1999.

It is much easier to utilize the AGM phone app and transfer videos and pics from scope to app than to deal with that tiny card and have another slot on scope for dirt and moisture.

The Atn I had was absolutely junk. It would delete its rifle profiles when it would freeze up. My iray 384 has a better image than the atn 640 I ran.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

I can see this^^^^

So far, I'm glad I didn't buy an ATN.

The weatherproof rating isn't good. The advertise it as weather resistant....oh boy!

2 of the pros you mentioned are not even relevant to me. Mines a 3.5 and everything from 25-225yds has been shot on 3.5.
Color options are useless to me…I’ve about settled on black hot. Occasionally I’ll use white hot. Everything else is useless “for me”.
The buttons on the iRay and the AGM are pretty easy once you use them enough. So that’s #3 down, lol.

The battery deal sounds sweet. But the iRay has and internal battery and takes external so I could hunt 24hrs straight if I wanted.
The AGM eats batteries. I’ll eventually have to get something to be able to hunt several stands with it.

I definitely don't like what I see with this ATN scope.

WB,
Your iRay a 384 or a 640? If a 640, can add about another $1000 to the ticket.

The V2 AGM Rattler has a removable Lith-ion that's supposed to last 9 to 11. It comes with 2 of those.

I know that it will last at least 9 hrs as battery still shows half charge and I had it on for more than 5 hrs last weekend over 2 nights.

The V1 Rattlers utilize CR123s...last 4 hrs. Need external power or a pocket full of 123s to hunt long.

Both thermals are 640’s.
And yeah, 4hrs is stretching it with the V1 Rattlers, lol. More like about 2 or maybe 2.5hrs. And those are the 3.7v batteries too.
I’m not a got to have better than someone else, I just know what I want and save until I get it. The iRay was Christmas gift from the wife. The AGM was bought as a backup and if anyone else wanted to tag along. I could hide the AGM easier than another iRay, lol. Even the AGM 640 was almost half price of the iRay.

Hide?

You need a She Money account. That's money she don't know nuthin' about.

But, I do know what u mean. If many beavers hadn't caused folks problems this past year then I wouldn't have a thermal scope now...or an ebike......or a suppressor soon....lol

I'm considering buying another scope to use as a scanner. Thought about just getting a good lower power monocular (for wider FOV), but I think I'd be more satisfied with another scope...and use as a scanner or mount to rifle as needed.

A friend let me use his rifle with atn scope on it last winter. I had no problem identifying coyotes at night with it, but the problem was I couldn’t hit anything with it. It didn’t seem to hold its zero. Sighted it in twice with multiple shots. Missed 5 coyotes and 1 cat with it, gave it back to the owner. Not sure what model it was , but I think it was a entry level one, didn’t have video capabilities.

Personally I would have absolutely no use for a recording or picture taking option. Battery life and resolution would be my two big factors. And waterproofness, of course. I've never used a thermal scope, or even looked through one. But I have used a few thermal monoculars and a set of high end binoculars. I tried an entry level set that were one of those three letter acronym brands. Total waste of money in my opinion. On the other hand I've used some higher end pulsars and they were super impressive but very expensive also.

I don't think there is a thermal scope made that don't video record. Some don't have audio recording.

I will say batteries make a huge difference. I have some now for the iRay and last about 4+ hours each…have 4 of them and still have 4 that I bought over a year ago that last close to 3hrs. The good news if I can get 4 batteries for less than $30 shipped. Even just 4 a year is money well spent.

My scope doesn’t have audio recording. That model/version came out about 3-4mon after I purchased mine. Not a deal breaker for me either way. It would be cool to hear the suppressed round hitting the target, but I hear it real time so that’s good enough.

Swamp, I really expected to see some videos from this weekend, lol!

WB,
Didn't go up to the hog property. Been taking care of some projects around home. I'll head back up there soon and will post the videos.

Good deal. I’m still waiting for the hogs to return to our property. Before all this rain we had an area logged that was their main hide area. We may have run them off for good. That area will be cleaned up this summer if we get a dry spell and pines will be planted next year.

My buddy (that can also hunt same property) is there now. He has killed 6 hogs so far today...with thermal scope in daytime. He killed one last night.

Three of us that hunt the property have killed 21so far.
