Got tired of seeing DP laying on side of barn so spread them out and power washed. Need to modify and repair some but most just a little TLC. Do you paint of dip when doing leg holds? If paint might do 50% white and others black or brown.

Mine get used about all year, but when they ain’t used they stay in the back of the truck (camper shell). If any happen to get rusty they are the first I set next time I set. A coon will clean up a rusty trap after one catch. If I want to clean them, I’ll drop them in a flowing creek for a couple days.

Same here. I like a tan color so it blends in with the dead grass. But a coon is going to wear it off no matter what color you use.

I power washed mine, then dipped them in rustoleum
primer deluted with acetone, so the inside was covered
with paint, then they get painted white.

I wash mine in 5-gallon buckets of very hot water and Dawn. They soak for a bit then I flush them out, scrape the insides with a big screw driver to remove still-attached gunk, and rinse. After a while of drying, they get rattle can sprayed. Some are white. Some are jet black. Some are tan-brown. The coon seem to care less about the color and more about the smells coming from them.

I made a jig out of 2 x 4 that holds 9 tr [Linked Image]
aps. I drill a hole that the stake on the bottom slides into (for Duke DP's) and a slot (for Griz traps) and I power wash. Takes very little time to clean them up. I let them dry and speed dip. Very fast way to go through 100 plus traps.

It works great but like any of the dyes, the first coon cleans it up to a shiney finish, lol. I just use the dip because it's fast and protects the traps from rusting.

Clean em and set em is about all I do now.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I've been painting mine with some cheap black spray paint but it doesn't take long for that paint to get rubbed off. So I think I'm going to go with the speed dip route this year and see how well it holds up.

I was going to boil dip a bunch of new leg hold traps and was wandering if would hold up better than rattle can paint on DP traps?

Powder coating would hold up better than anything but even over time would wear off. In my opinion any method of coating is just rust prevention during the off season.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Just wire brushed all mine today. Going to get a fresh coat of paint when it warms up.

Dipping or using dye on traps will definitely hold up better than just painting them. The only good thing about painting traps is it's fast and easy to do touch ups throughout the season.
