Only saw a few reds go on the block while I was there watching, and I was distracted each time, so I never did hear any prices on them. I would suspect probably in the low teens, but can't say for certain. My sincere apologies but it's probably Trump's Fault !!! w

I had very little fur to sell.
I was there mostly to watch the auction.
Sold 6 mink with a high of $10.50 & $9.83 average.
Sold 6 rats with a high of $3.00 & $2.43 average.
Sold 1 1XL coon, December caught, with clear, white, unblemished leather for $2.50.
Sold 1 December Grey Fox complete with legs/paws for $21.50.
#2lbs, 13ozs of Beaver Oil sacks for $1.60 total.
#7lbs, 4ozs. of dried beaver castor for $23.00 per lb.
There were no marten sold while I was there nor did I see any there on the tables waiting to sell.
That's it.

$80 a quart rat glands you must be rollin in the dough Walleye Head. Them Dexter rats got big glands on em. Not me, I only had 6 rats this spring. Didn't trap rats what with averages running well under $3.00 & 100's of rats turning into bug dust up in North Bay at FHA. Those rat glands were someone else's. w

What is the selling commission for Herkimer? I think it is 8%, Plus you have to be a member of Fulton-Montgomery, or Foothills trappers, or NYSTA to sell at Herkimer. w

That was a lot of beaver on that sale. Winters have been getting warmer and less snow and freezing every year. Trappers have a lot more open water trapping. A lot easier than trapping through 2 feet of ice. That gets a lot of people out and about trapping more. And rising prices. That's my take on it

How do you locals pronounce Herkimer? I've not been there, yet. Pronounced: HER--KIM--ER Named for Revolutionary War General Nicholas Herkimer who led 800 local militia and 60 Oneida Indians in the Battle of Oriskany Creek on August 6th, 1777 against 100 British Loyalist light infantry plus 400 Mohawk Indians allies under Sir John Johnson and Joseph Brant. Herkimer was mortally wounded in the leg & later died of infection Although The battle was an initial tactical defeat for American forces, the British under Lt. Colonel Barry S Ledger were forced to abandon their siege of Fort Stanwick and withdraw, and so it was an overall strategic outcome for American forces. walleyed

I’ll expand on walleyes history lesson. Even though Herkimer militia and Oneida Allie’s suffered more casualties during the initial ambush, they held the ground. So in essence they won the battle. The true significance of the battle is 2 fold, 1. It was the 1st time in decades that tribes of the Iroquois confederacy fought against each other. Thus the Oneidas allied withe the colonials, ended up on the winning side of the American Rev.. 2. The battle of Oriskany forced British General St Ledger to retreat back to Canada, so his army did not link up with General Burgoyne, resulting in the American colonial army victory at the battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the American rev. .
Another interesting thing about oriskany, it is where the term ,” turn coat,” originated. Tory troops turned their coats inside out exposing the brown inside color. They tried to fool Herkimer’s troops with this tactic and tried to flank him. The militia was expecting reinforcements from the flank direction, but One of the militia recognized one of the Tories and Herkimer troops opened up on them and repelled them.
One of my ancestral grandfathers fought there with Herkimer.

STETSON Hat Company now has more Fedora styles than Cowboy hats. I think the felt market may last at least 2-3 more years, unless of course the apple cart gets upset with over-production. Or until all the liberal urban cowboys find out they are made from animal fur. That’s what happened to the coyote market.

There were more beaver on that sale than the state of Oregon produced 3 years ago. 1,523 is a lot of beaver for any auction these days !!! 2,350 is a lot of muskrats for that auction lately as well !!! But then again, New York State has a lot of wild fur trappers and sells a lot of trapping licenses each year. 9,973 resident trapping licenses in 2022-2023. 1,799 resident senior trapping. 122 lifetime resident trapping. 284 Jr resident trapping. 62 non-resident trapping. 9 Jr non-resident trapping. A milder than usual winter helped to boost those numbers, for sure !!! w
