Have been using quick links but recently lost a trap to a coon. I know its because i didnt tighten it enough. I can see where split rings would be faster and easier.

I have read where some split rings are weak. Where can i buy good quality split rings?

Seems like they should be adequate for coon right?

Also, would you advise the use of these for coyote?

I know a guy that uses them for coon. Havn't heard him complain about them.

Personally i wouldn't use them on coyote. Maybe others will chime in

Paul has some good ones.

Personally I prefer sleep ez hooks which are just threaded caribeeners. Three things have to go wrong for them to fail, the nut has to come loose, then the gate has to be opened then held open with the trap or anchor end on the open side then it has to be wiggled out of the caribeener.

I like the sleep ez but they are no where near as strong as a quick link. I can pull an equal size quick link that would destroy a sleep ez.

But that said they'll hold a coyote just fine.

As long as you're not pulling earth anchors with a tractor a d hooking up directly to the carabineer they're plenty strong enough. Maybe if you had nears or wolves

Never had a problem from the ones Boss Paul sells on "The Store", click on the link at the bottom of the Talk forum page. If any doubts, double them up. $32/100.

I've used split rings from MTP and never had an issue with them on coyotes.

Nothing is foolproof. Never ever had a wrench tightened quick link come open. Only ever had one critter get away from a split ring. It was a raccoon, it somehow got a snare anchor end loop worked all the way around and removed the snare just like the ring is designed. I happened to have a video cam watching that one. It took a couple hours from when the snare cable went between the ring layers, but eventually it worked itself all the way around and came loose. Even crazier is that my doubled 14ga support wire held the whole works because of how i had crimped my support wire to the snare. That gave the snare another 14 inches of length which allowed the rascal to reach some solid entanglement and that was it. The next day when I arrived I scratched my head wondering if someone had tampered with my stuff and then left the coon hanging like that to mess with me. Ring still on the stake, support wire stretched tight, coon hanging at the end of the snare. Could hardly believe it when I watched the videos that night.

I used split rings on land for years until this happened. Now it might have been a bear, I don't know. ground was frozen so no tracks and catch circle was light so it was a short fight but I lost an mb650 because of it... I still use them all the time with water traps but Im gun shy using them on predator traps now...this was one of the HD ones like Paul, Tim and everyone else sells

Just like in climbing, redundancy is always a good thing. Double the metal goes a long ways toward retention.

The veterans here probably know this from reading Charlie Dobbins' books but...Charlie recommended drilling a very small hole through the split ring side and inserting a screw and nut to further secure the ring together. Now I am sure that the split rings today have stronger steel(?) than years back but using this screw and nut method just gives one a piece of mind. I personally don't use split rings on my land traps....I prefer the Crunch proof swivels that MTP sells or a welded JC Conner swivel or a screw type quick link like Paul sells but screwed on tight with a tool. Hope this helps....
