Ok gang,, I’ve got a friend in Ohio,, who’s having issues with nuisance raccoon… she’s needs them gone and asked me for advice…
I don’t know the laws in Ohio… so I did a google search and I got this bogus antitrapping/ pro wildlife removal specialist page.
It really ticked me off… saying trappers are the bad guys and that wildlife removal specialists are the good guys because they release everything unharmed ( in Illinois, all nuisance raccoon must be destroyed) . And trying to trap anything other than rodents are illegal.
Here’s the link if you guys want to see what I’m talking about..

https://greenvalleywildlifesolutions.com/is-it-legal-to-trap-nuisance-wildlife-animals-ohio/#:~:text=Unlawful%20Trapping%20for%20Property%20Owners%20in%20Ohio&text=It%20is%20unlawful%20for%20anyone,on%20the%20animal%20and%20situation.

Anyway, seeing how I can not google the appropriate information… can someone help point me in the right direction on how to help this individual out.
Greatly appreciate it

In Ohio it is legal for the property resident, or their representative, to trap and kill nuisance raccoons. It is illegal to release them off the property.

"Nuisance or sick raccoons may be trapped without a permit, but it is illegal to live trap and relocate them to a new area. In order to prevent the possible spread of raccoon diseases in Ohio, all live trapped raccoons must be released again on the homeowner's property or humanely
euthanized. "

HSUS runs a program in DC that spouts that nonsense and spread some money around to spout that nonsense. There are also many in the industry that are less than ethical in their marketing.

As a lot of landowners would probably do, have her get a few cage traps & keep euthanizing

Till that day.....

FWI: The links didn't work, but that's OK, as Boss Paul doesn't want links to anti sites posted on here.

Only animal issues you can't take care are ones that requite a permit from the Chief of Wildlife or the USDA. If you can hunt/trap it without buying extra tags/stamps, you can deal with it as a landowner, with the exception of grey fox and most migratory birds.

The website is run by a marketing company so not sure who put the information there

Thanks guys!!! I thought it was absolutely bogus, that it was illegal for anyone other than a “LICENSED “ wildlife removal specialist to be able to catch the critters.
This is exactly how folks get taken advantage of.

In roundabout way he is right because most people that aren't nuisance trappers do illegally relocate animals that they catch if they live in town or in a subdivision. I get more calls to empty a cage than I do to set the traps myself.

Looks like that nuisance trapper , is misleading with his interpretation of the laws.
Making it almost a sure deal for people to depend on him for animal removal.
Any animal that is causing damage to your property or livestock can be caught by the landowner or their representative to remove such animals.
Ohio law states that the animal is to be euthanized on said property , or released on said property.
If you know how to catch them , you as the property owner have the right to remove them.
Cage traps are the most common type trap used.
Copy and paste the link in google
search

Law doesn't require dispatch on the original property. That would be a PR and legal disaster

See, this is what I always wondered about. As KeithC wrote, you either need to euthanize or release on site where caught. They can't be transported and released elsewhere. But as you are mentioning you interpret as they don't need to dispatch on site. So technically, what if, someone gets stopped who isn't a licensed adc trapper, with a live coon in a box trap in the bed of the truck? Are they legal by just saying "Oh no officer, I wasn't going to release this coon, I was hauling him off somewhere private to read him his last rites."?

A good way to learn the regulation is to take the online test there is an online training manual. A lot of requirements and regulations to learn. You will not pass the test without studying the manual first.
Go to the ODNR site.

The rule states " euthanized or released on site ". I know some get a bit confused and interpret that to mean " euthanized on site or released on site". Nuisance trappers can possess a live animal that was caught for up to 4 days. We definitely aren't taking the thing back to the original capture site a few days later to euthanize it. Non nuisance trappers may hold it for 24 hours. There are a few animals we are allowed to legally relocate with permission of the landowner.
