The Aleut used what were called spear throwers from their kayaks (baidarka in Russian). The darts were a lot shorter than what I and others use now. They had a variety of points, one type had kind of a curve to it to keep it on the surface of the water versus diving below the surface.

I got pretty good with mine. The kinetic energy of an atlatl dart fives it great potential in taking game or killing an enemy.

The small tool trade of the Inuit is quite something to see probably the same as to the Aleut stone tools. Maybe Crosspatch from Labrador can chime in

Gulo I do not know much about native American artifacts But I do know the two you have pictured at the start of this thread are fine looking examples from a time when life was lived in a very different way Every time I see the workmanship that is part of how people from many years ago survived I am impressed

As the early people worked through the big mega critters, they didn't need the heavier darts and bigger points, as the woodlands spread and the game got smaller and more elusive the darts and points got smaller and finally bows and arrows became more effective..
A lot of the folks that practice with Atlatls use them for fishing, not many states have legalized their use hunting game..

I figured, with the coming of the horse, and the adoption of this "new technology", that bows and arrows became more effective and less cumbersome, rather than a loss of the megafauna?

What happened to Fauna ? The last I knew she was still running the Bear Flag Restaurant on Cannery Row.

Been a lot of knowledge lost. Dump a modern man naked into a wilderness and in 3-4 weeks 99% would be dead. In a months time an ancient man would be fairly comfortable again. (spring-summer)

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
