Instead of tackling a real problem, the federal government is about to make laws that new table saws will need to be equipped with "flesh sensing technology" If you have even seen the "Saw Stop" table saws, this is what that means. If you have ever seen the price tag on a "Saw Stop" table saw, prepare to second mortgage the house. I have looked into these saws. From what I have seen, good luck trying to cut any wood that has a high moisture content. Ripping pressure treated lumber will be a thing of the past. If and when that blade does get activated because of wet lumber, bust out the wallet. You're looking at hundreds to fix it. Want to use a dado? Bust out the wallet, you'll need to put a completely different mechanism on that saw for the wider blade. Is there anything the government won't stick it's frick'in nose into? Naturally, I've been wanting to upgrade my saw. Guess I should reconsider my priorities before this passes, and it looks like it will. More bureaucrats making laws about things that they are completely ignorant about. What else is new.
Im gona paint all my saws black ,that will really get them . cant you imagine a solid black circle sawmill with no saw stop or guard's , o how evil that would be .

Not suprisingly, it seems no one actually read the article, or didn’t understand it. Its not the government pushing for the regulation, its the guy that invented the Stopsaw thats pushing for it. He’s also most likely responsible for the article. He stands to make millions more than he already has if all manufacturers were forced to use his technology.

I read the article and that was not my take away at all. Steve Gass, the inventor of this technology and one of the founders of Saw Stop is not pushing for this regulation change, Saw Stop and their parent company Tooltechnic Systems, have pledged to allow other manufacturers to produce safer saws regardless of the patents they hold, many of which are going to expire soon.
This is being pushed by Biden appointed liberals on the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. According to the article republicans and tool manufacturers are opposed to it.
Quote
Over the years, Republicans on the commission have sided with the power tool industry in opposing further regulations. But with new Biden administration appointees, proponents on the commission appear to have a majority. In October, the CPSC voted to move forward on the mandate, which is expected to get approval later this year.

The Power Tool Institute, the trade group that includes big power-tool makers such as Bosch, DeWalt and Milwaukee, as well as lesser-known brands, maintains that the new safety rule would be an overreach.
Eh...wot?

"Not surprisingly", Wrong! Saw Stop said they will wave their ability to file suite for others using the technology, as Lugnut stated above. I just condensed it. The video actually shows them stating it at the hearings.
I BELIEVE IN MY GOD, MY COUNTRY AND IN MYSELF.

On the SawStop table saw you can override the safety stop very easily. It is actually designed to be able to. We cut aluminum often with the override engaged. You could cut wet wood and treated wood as well with the override engaged.

I have my great grandfather’s table saw. He was a carpenter and I will say the it isn’t even remotely close to OSHA approved. There isn’t a guard on the thing anywhere…blade nor motor. Lots of homemade modifications to it done by him. And it is built to last! I do a lot of woodworking and have probably close to 1000 hours on it myself. I still have all my digits but you have to learn respect for your equipment. I can see where the casual user would benefit from improved guards.

I was a shop teacher and my program was granted a Saw stop. watched a University student run his hand through a dado blade. I messed my thumb up when I was 10 on my dads tabletop I was a shop teacher and my program was granted a Saw stop. An incredible product. And better than any other commercial table Saw Ive used. Especially for student safety along with easy setup Strike a staple ,, and the saw stops
But However
There are plenty of other ways to operate a table saw safely. I had 9th grade students run miles and miles of wood and plastic with a stock feeder . I even worked with a teacher who used a Powermatic with a blind high school student
The legislation is trash there are too many times the activation can go wrong..
Work hard play hard

I think that thing to remember here are that accidents happen. I have been a machinist, a woodworker and worked in the industrial field most of my life. I still have all my digits. That's not to say that I'm perfect, that I can't make a mistake. Someday I may have a bad accident. The thing here to remember is that a tool is a tool. The tool rarely messes up, the operator does. Someday I may become lax in my diligence. However, the thing to remember is operating things safely, using common sense and without taking shortcuts. Stick to that plan and you'll probably never have a problem.
