Snared one today that set my personal best for smallest caught that I didn't split open a brood female to get. Couldn't have gone ten pounds. Too early and too big for this year's kit but last year's should be twice the size.

Best guess, late litter. But how late is that?

I caught one about ten years ago at the start of Pa’s December season….it was the size of a 2-3 X muskrat. I doubt it weighed four pounds. The hide was 12”X 14”. It’s tanned, over at my son’s house.

Did not weigh it but it was about the size of a big muskrat. Caught March 27 in NC a few years back in a 330. From a distance I thought it was a muskrat. I have caught plenty of females here in late April that had not dropped yet. I assumed this one was very early rather than late.

I caught one around Chistmas that was small enough to be instantly killed by a 750. I thought of putting it on a rat stretcher and sending it to FHA just to mess with them. It would be my only chance at a top lot 'rat from these parts, anyway, the poor thing boarded at 32" (XS - $7) lol. As far as litters? Beaver are rodents, if they have a total litter failure, they will just keep on trying.

In Oregon's beaver transplant records they recorded a female in August that birthed a couple of kits in the transplant crate. They didn't survive though.

I once caught a beaver under ice in December in a 110 that was the size of a big muskrat.

Well, there goes ALL that beaver biology that we have been taught....Ma' Nature stepped in and changed the books....lol
I have similar stories regarding little beaver caught at ALL times of the year...confusing. Pup coyotes being caught in December.
Young coon caught in February...I'll never figure it?

Have caught 2 kits several years ago, both being only 4 or 5 lbs in November. They were caught about 30 miles apart in 11/2 coils in mink pocket sets. Go figure!

I wonder if this could possibly have something to do with beaver adapting to drought, or other weather conditions?
