Farmers seem to be prepping for corn and peanuts in VA over the last week. Lots of fields getting sprayed and turned over.

Anyone looking for points? Been on several good hunts inbetween the rains.

Nice finds. My wife and kids find them better than I do. I saw a guy that went to a river and shoveled dirt into a box with wire bottom and sifted it in the river and was finding a ton of heads. He was close to an old camp down from a dam. The water fluctuating broke the banks down exposing the heads. He found several walking along the bank before sifting any at all.

I think that's probably the best method for me vs walking fields, especially since I live near the Ohio river and lots of natives lived and traveled here.

The rifle has no will of its own it may be used for evil but there are more good men than evil men and evil will be corrected by good men with rifles.

Wow! Those are much better than we find here in PA.

Here’s my favorite…my son gets permission to hunt points in certain fields near creeks or natural wet areas. Farmers thinks he crazy when he asks just for walking plowed fields looking for points and no other type of hunting, lol.

Seems to be all water based for me. If you have flat spots around long established water, they seem to be the hot spots. I can look at a field near any big swamp, creek or river and just about tell you were there should be. Not always correct...

An old man told me once that if I was sleeping in the ground, I wouldn't want to get wet (no low spots) and I wouldn't want to be laying at an angle (no draws or hill sides).

Had a heck of a rain last night, can't wait to get back out there.

That Red tip is awesome on that point. Believe that may indicate that it was heat treated at some point???

I found two in my yard with my metal detector. I found out that later natives made some out of metal such as copper. The larger copper one I found is for a spear, I was told by an expert on Indian lore.

Remember as a kid we played army and you gave up the fort so the other side got it? Of course you don't. Little kids aren't that stupid.

Interesting Trapper7. I too have found one copper spear point and other chunks of copper in a river that was presumably used to spear sturgeon each spring. I also found a copper fish hook. My understanding is that the copper points were actually made earlier than stone points in our area. The copper came from float deposits on and near Isle Royal/Lake Superior.

I only find crummy civil war bullets and buttons with my detector grin

The red point on the arrowhead is more likely from a mineral causing the red color.

I have several chert rocks I picked up in the Bighorn Basin in Wyoming, all different colors, yellow, red, dark gray, white. My professional geologist buddy to me it's caused by whatever mineral is present when the rock was formed.
These rocks are the size of a big baked potato.

Down here that red is likely caused by heat-treating the chert.

Back in the 60's where I lived a local tire shop sold a brand of tire called Mohawk. One day my dad got a flat and we found a flint arrowhead sticking in the Mohawk tire.

Nope, that is just normal color banding for jasper. At least it looks like jasper to me. I have some that look like that with yellow and red jasper.

Some of my Kalapuya points I've found in plowed fields:
