dello 40 in winter and dello 30 in summer was the old standard for big trucks. dont even sell it now. things have sure changed. back then 500,000 miles engine needed majored. if it went that far. million plus is not uncommon now.

My 2015 Silverado has 213000 miles and the engine runs like new. I have always kept the rpms down as that is the worst in my mind. Have replaced transmission, front hubs twice. Still original U joints too.

I can think of plenty of engines that have horrible reputations, and used 5w20 or 5w30.

The only thing manufacturers worry about these days is meeting ever tightening emissions and getting past warranty - that's it. These new engines aren't making it to 250,000 -400,00 miles like many of the engines of the late 80s to 90s did. As far as vehicle engines with a good reputation getting sold more , I worked in auto parts and you would be surprised how many men didn't even know what engine they had In the vehicle they were driving. Over the last 30 years you can see how things are being engineered to fail sooner. You cant sell many vehicles if you build them to last 20 - 25 years.

Manitobas Crown run auto insurance agency writes a vehicle off for minimal damage if it’s over a certain age, 12 or 15 years I think. My new vehicles are usually 5-10 years old and get run to the ground before replacing.

if the air bags deploy there are so many of them and at the price they get for them car is done as soon as the air bags go even if it was in good shape and 5 years old

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Often times the cost of airbag deployment alone will total a car, even before the actual bodywork is tallyed up. Especially with side curtain airbags and things like seatbelt pretensioners-its not the just the airbags that must be replaced, but also the control module, the headliner, the seat belts, all the upper trim panels, etc. Better than being dead though.

todays small high horsepower, high RPM engines are built with tighter tolerances in the bearings, they need thinner oil to lubricate them.

I believe that this is all being caused by the governments tighter gas milage standards.

Here's the answer on 0-W8 and 0-W16.

Every one keeps repeating the tighter tolerances line - there's a difference between tolerances and clearances. On crankshaft bearings and journals you have to have a certain amount of CLEARANCE per inch of circumference - you cant change that formula and that has not changed since probably the 50s - this cannot be 'tightened up' - with heat and expansion the parts would seize together.Tolerance is the allowed variation of sizes between a series of the same part. So when people say things like they have to use thinner oil because the tolerances are tighter now , they really are thinking of CLEARANCE , but that's simply not true - clearance measurements have been the same over the last 60 years. The one and only reason for super thin oils is energy conservation - moving parts and rotating assemblies can move about much easier in a less viscous fluid. All this allows them to meet tightening regulations - the trade off is the engines don't last as long.
