Well, as many on here successfully predicted: the Beaverpeeler ain’t too pleased with how the castor to FHA experiment turned out.

14.25 lbs shipped and FHA shrinkage formula gave me credit for 187 oz

90 oz graded #1 and sold for $60/lb
90 oz graded #2 and did not sell
7 oz graded #3 and sold for $30/lb

What really amazes me is zero ozs graded western select!?

The following pic is representative of the 14 lbs I sent and indeed was part of the shipment:

Maybe none graded western select since I shipped it to a midwestern agent?

They got you by the castors, nothing you can do. Lesson learned never ship to FHA.

FHA would certainly grade your product (fur, castor, or otherwise)
based strictly on what it was grade-wise, not based on the address of the
shipper or the address of the agent it originated from, right ?

Otherwise that would mean that they graded with an unfair bias !!! frown

If the agent had an order to fill, then maybe some got diverted.
there is a definitly popular odour with the western, and your colour looks pale enough
( maybe when the whiskey orders are all in the rest goes over) grin

Agent's job is just to get the castor over to the warehouse at North Bay right?

$337.50 for 90 oz. + 13.13 for seven ounces .So how much money commission, shipping cost etc. will be deducted from the $350.63 ? The real stinker is you still have 90oz. you have not been paid for. Possibly you could borrow against that at the bank with interest of course.

In hindsight I would have sold it all at one of the association sales for $37.50 lb after commission is taken out. But when I shipped the best price I had heard was $30/lb so I felt it was worth the risk to give it one more shot. The western select prices of the past definitely was the dangling carrot for me.

I'll have to look into it closer tonight. Loneranger said his price was about the same...just over $4

Yet another reason why I finish all my fur. Leaves you with lots of options.
I no saled 500 plus 3X coon one time at our state fur auction. The 1X and 2X brought what I wanted. The 3X were $2 shy of what I had in mind. One of the buyers gave me what I wanted for them before I got them all pulled off the table. Made over a grand in about 30 seconds.
My darling wife thinks there a little Jewish blood in my veins lol

Clay, you and I think alike. Don't know how many times I withdrew fur off the tables at an OTC sale when I wasn't happy with the offers. I think the buyers figured I would take whatever or try to haggle and since I had large quantities of fur they were often times upset to see me jut take my fur and go home. LOL

And I've put up my fur since I was 18

The bigger story is that the castor demand is down everywhere, perhaps partially because of more beavers being trapped. My castor. buyer is offering about 1/3 less this year. Couple of his European perfume customers have closed the door, Just reality … lower price still ok considering pelt value

I knew an old country buyer years ago who would try to pull a fast one on the big auction houses by taking stale otter and bobcats and cutting the tags off them and going down and getting them tagged as fresh hides before sending them off, he also took some cats from a state known for its low value bobcats and cut the tags off and retagged them in a state known for better cats. I figured he was wasting his time and chancing some big tickets for virtually no gain. I once had a particularly ugly Idaho bobcat I sent to NAFA grade as a Central cat... made top lot. Lol
