Going to be cleaning out my Mom's chest freezer and she has many packages of beef, chicken, and pork that are showing signs of freezer burn. Thinking of setting up the grinder, jerky tube and dehydrator to make a bunch of dog treats.
Anybody else do this?

Dave.

Forever in debt to my Father who introduced me to trapping.
May I be half the man he was.

My son makes his own dog treats using all the geese he gets. I don't want to hear it, we all here think they taste like home made poop. We have tried more recipes that you can think of. But I digress. He breasts them out and bones the legs out, slices it all into thin strips then runs all the meat thru his dehydrator. Bag it up and store it in a fridge or freeze it. Grinding is not needed, just tends to get all crumbled up in the package. The dogs absolutely love it and it takes them a bit of time to chew it up.

My niece cuts liver into straps and runs them through a dehydrater then breaks them into smaller pieces. My dog will do back flips for them!

My husky and shih tsu would find a dried beaver foot in the backyard and would absolutely kill you (at least that was their attitude) if you tried to take it away from them.

Dog food is all they’re good for….and I’d stop after breasting them. No need to save dark meat.

I dry slice and put deer livers in the dehydrator for dog treats. When it is deer season I'm covered up and low in freezer space pretty fast. The dogs are so full they won't rest any more . They get all the trimming silver skin ECT when I'm butchering. When they just won't eat any more the rest goes in gallon zip lock out in a cooler and feed out over the week. Drying the liver saves it for them for later when there is not so much, and keeps it out of the freezer.

When cleaning out the freezer we put the stuff that needs to go in one place in the freezer get it out to thaw then just feed it out tell it's gone. No more extra work required.

Yep, all the time. Make 3 lbs. of ground deer meat jerky just like I do for me... without any seasoning. I just keep it in the freeze after it comes out of the dehydrator. That much last him about a month.

I think sometimes dogs need something tough to chew so the dehydrated route seems the best to me.

Feed 11 dogs a day - no way I am taking time to make treats for them. Cut the plastic or paper off the frozen meat and let them eat it.

I open up the chambers of the stomach of elk, deer, antelope and moose. Rinse them all out really well with salt water, then rinse again with fresh water. they go in the ground trimmings left over from butchering game along with heart. The liver turns to mush when you grind it so I toss in a box of oatmeal and cook it all in my All American 42 qt. pressure cooker. Most times takes two batches. adding cooked pumpkin left over from Halloween which is around the same time as hunting season can make enough dog food to last a really long time.
