I let a little guy about that size go when I was younger and never regretted it. Very docile little guy and had a family to go back to (less a couple I took)

I rehabbed a fawn whitetail once (no not supposed to do that either). Was a great experience and I'd do it again, even though I kill a few ever year for the freezer.

We have brains and a conscience for a reason. Not to mention seems we got a bit softer when it comes to things like this as we age.

I raised a baby coon once from May to October. He started getting cross so I let him go up at our cabin.
He would come back every couple days for some handouts then head back to the Bush.
Then just before winter he showed up with 5 other coon for his handout.I couldnt tell which one he was so I shot and skinned them all..

I felt obligated to the little guy...being I was the cause of his predicament.

Couldn't agree more. It's never been about killin' for me. It was always about making a living. If I have no reason to kill a critter, I'm not going to.

A beaver maybe, but not coons or possums. Beavers have no bearing on the properties I trap, but everything else does. Pinky size or adult size, they all pass over the Rainbow Bridge.
Except Reds…they all get a pass until I catch more than one every couple of years.

Walleyed,
Didn't get a weight, but 4 pounds is too much.

More like 1.5 to 2 lbs.

The "obligation stage". That's a difficult stage to get thru when your being paid to kill 'em. Maybe it just time for me to slow it down some.

Here is one that I caught years ago. I gave it to a lady who kept it until it weighed about ten pounds at which time she released it in a pond in her back yard. I don't remember what happened to it after that.

Had this little guy in a snare a couple years ago. Like you Swamp Wolf, I couldn't kill it.
