This rascal was too close to my beaver sets this morning. A fine example of our southeastern cottonmouths.

2 more days and I'm pulling beaver traps until December.

Primitive bowyers would love that skin for backing a bow.

I skinned one for a fella one time, and that was enough. Dang, that thing had an odor to it.

That dark brown stripe thru the eye with the light-colored bands above and below!!!

I've trained myself to look for that in the sticks & limbs, trees, grass, and weeds.

I believe I would keep a revolver on me with a few cylinders loaded with smaller shot. Coper heads and a rare timber rattler is all we have around here.

I can't imagine they would taste much different than a timber and I like timber rattlesnake. Maybe the fish diet but I've never eaten a moccasin.

Saw my first when burning last Friday. It got a little too hot for him so he was slippin’ through a field.
He didn’t make it. I rarely see one your color, all our are almost black.

Some here are mostly black. There are two subspecies here....the Eastern Cottonmouth and the Florida Cottonmouth. The Florida usually is darker with some having a more greenish coloration.

Both subspecies look almost identical when young and up to a couple feet long.

Yep. That time of year to slow down and observed your surroundings. Also, where you put your feet and hands.
Tater rake in one hand. Revolver with snake shot on hip. This time of year I slow way down when I'm in their territory.
Plus that spidy sense all us southern trappers have learned. Your gut instinct will never let you down.

Always looking for reloading componets

I know a beaver or two, because I've seen a beaver or two

Wow, what's the chances of finding a snake like that stuck to a rake? wink

Lol

Excellent chance if the snake is within reach of that tater rake.
