This is an interesting device. A guy told me his insurance company offered him 1 free.

I'm not sure how it works.

Looks like you can buy it for a hundred bucks without involving your insurance company.

According to their website, Ting can help prevent 80% of home electrical fires. If true, it sounds like a must have. I know 8 people who have had electrical fires. Though small fires, they still did a few hundred to a few thousand in damage. 2 were started by box fans, 1 was started by baseboard heating, 1 was started by a freezer, 1 was started by a computer monitor and 3 were in the wiring.

It's understandable why insurance companies would give them away.

I have known of three electrical fires here in a very small population.

A hundred bucks is cheap insurance

looking at the web site and the claims and disclaimers it appears to be a voltage monitor arc detection
they don't actually explain how it works
but by saying not all types of fires and be detected just the most common.

your 2 most common electrical fires being thermal and arc/spark

thermal would be a little less common because getting to flash point without smelling smoke or tripping a breaker would be less likely.

an arc you could have ignition seconds after a brief but intense load , as in you just shorted and through a bunch of sparks into a fuel source.

it stands to reason that if your watching voltage fluctuations with a time and frequency things like eclectic motors draw big and will drop voltage but after the initial resistance is overcome the voltage goes back up but not as fast as if you have a bouncing short where 2 wires short but push apart and throw sparks , enough to rapidly fluctuate voltage but not enough thermal load to trip a breaker

remember this is only on one phase and one circuit but probably works to see those very rapid voltage changes

it would seem a better option would go into a double breaker bay on the breaker box but would be beyond most home owners capability to install.
or a 220 outlet so it have both phases.

but apparently this sees enough to be useful.

anyone else with a better idea of how it works.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I wonder if other insurance companies are promoting it too
