A tree fell on my Tundra back in December during a big wind and rain event. The insurance company totaled it. I’ve spent the last three months shopping for a suitable replacement. I finally found a decent deal 80 miles and 2+ hours away. It’s pretty much the same as my old tundra, except for the shorter bed, which I hate. But trying to find a double cab with an 8 foot bed anymore is all but impossible. It’s a 2018 Tundra SR5 4WD with the 5.7 L and a tow package rated at 10,200 pounds. Under 53,000 miles.

You could have made a fortune selling the squashed one to a Mexican. They love the Low Riders.
Good looking new truck Lug.

Them dark colors are a bear to keep clean Fluid Film and tranny service coming soon. The truck lived it's whole life in Florida, never driven on salted roads. The frame is super-clean, no rust anywhere. I passed on quite a few that were black, wasn't happy about the dark gray on this one but it was too good of a deal to let it go based on the dark color.

How are the head lights at night..in the rain ? IDK, I haven't driven it at night or in the rain yet, just brought it home today. It does have halogen lights, I never owned a vehicle equipped with them before, don't know what to expect. Halogen fog lamps too. It has a cool feature where you can adjust the headlights downwards when your towing a heavy load. In my old Tundra I was always getting flashed at even though my low beams were on. The trailer load sits the back of the truck down enough that oncoming drivers think you're high-beaming them. The adjustable feature should solve that issue.

If the frame was good on the other one I would have put a new bed on it and put a new windows and keep it also.
Your new truck looks great. I'm sure you will enjoy it Frame was shot. Not bad enough to be replaced by Toyota (no perforations) but plenty of scale.

Nice ride and I suspect Nessy is right. The wet Gulf winds down around Corpus ear vehicles and AC condensers super fast.

What year the one the tree fell on? Mine is a 2012 with 48 thousand miles. It was a 2008 that I bought new as a leftover in 2009. I had just rolled the odometer to 100,000 the month before the tree fell on it. That knocked down the insurance pay out. I mostly used it for short hops towing my backhoe and hauling construction equipment locally. It's the same truck as the new one except for the shorter bed and one level up in trim. I remember how difficult it was to find a double-cab with an eight-foot bed back in 2009. My dealer finally located one 400 miles away in Erie PA and had it delivered to Allentown PA for me to look at. It has gotten harder to find a full length bed. I saw tons of extra short beds (5.5') for sale. Makes me wonder if folks bought them then realized how completely useless they are. They're basically an SUV with a little box on the back. Not to mention they're really stupid looking!

Milage on that V8? Looks like Tacomas only come with 4 cylinders now at least the Off Road model I looked up did.

A little under 53,000 Jerry. If I didn't have to tow my backhoe I would have bought a Tacoma.
Toyota discontinued the V-8 in 2022. I was going to buy a new one and was building it online until I couldn't find the 5.7L option.
Twin turbo V-6's are the option now. They are impressive with more HP and torque than my 5.7 which is no slouch. But they had trouble with them the first year and I just don't trust the durability of a small engine with that much power.

I like the old one better. Dents are a sign of maturing….. The old one had plenty, even before the tree fell on it. It had a rough life. I'm sure the new one will have it's share before too long. That's what happen when you use a truck like a truck.

I almost bought a 2018 Silverado Trail Boss to replace the Tundra until I started really doing my homework and saw all the trouble GM's been having with the Ecotec engines and their refusal to fix the problems. I own two older 3/4 Chevy cargo vans. They have the Vortec engines and have been very reliable. The stuff I read about the Ecotecs shut down the idea of getting a newer GM.
This Tundra was not Certified but of course they tried to sell me an extended warranty package, they always do. And like always, I declined.
It was a long search to find this one. I looked at dozens, maybe hundreds of Tundras, F-150's and 250's over a three-month period before I landed on this one.

I'm with you in being leary of those super charged small engines, but that seems to be the trend. And I think Law Dog is right about the new Tacomas only having the 4 banger, but they say it is the most powerful Tacoma ever. Anyway, your Tundra looks like a nice truck and I hope it serves you well!

Thanks Trapdog.
It's my understanding that the V-8's are being phased out by all car manufacturers due to EPA-mandated mileage requirements. I haven't researched that, it's just what I'm hearing.

Don't buy a Ford
As I predicted....the paint is coming off the aluminum panels...or oxidizing undah the paint...causing blistahs
Plus all the Ford rear windows are leaking...so my glass guy tells me

What's gas mileage like in them? My '92 was not good on gas On the Tundra? Crap, like most of the v8 models in any brand. Maybe a touch worse. Best ive ever done was a touch over 17 and that was babying it at 55-60.

Darn tree--we had 1 fall on a truck once, it's a bummer. I'm glad you found a replacement you like Lug. What kind of fluid film/application method are you using & will you apply it annually to keep it looking that nice?

Yeah, Toyota trucks are infamous for their poor gas mileage. My old Tundra (5.7L) averaged around 11 mpg. I once got 18 mpg out of it on a long drive with cruise control. Towing my backhoe (machine + trailer=9,000lbs) I get about 7-8 mpg.
My 3/4 ton Chevy vans are not a whole lot better with about 12 mpg average.
You want to talk poor gas mileage? Fill my 80's-something ten-ton Chevy Dump with the huge gasoline V-8 up and cruise around, about 4 mpg loaded.

First of all Lugnut Sorry to hear aout your truck.!! I am sure that was just what you did not need to have to deal with .I am one of those that has a truck with a 5.5 bed and the crew cab 4 door I agree with your statement regarding hauling anything in the bed But hauling things in the truck bed was not something I did often In general I see more people with a truck pulling a trailer behind My plan was to use it as a trapping/hunting vehicle more than general transportation I would haul my dogs in the back seat I had a canvas hunting gear organizer that hung off of the front seat You could put your guns ammo hunting clothes in the assorted pouches that where part of the organizer It held a lot of gear but was never a problem in keeping it where it was supposed to be and so long as iI put things where they belong I did not have a problem of not having things i needed On the bed of-the truck I had a Diamond Back bedcover It was made of aluminum and it was everything you could ask for in a bed topper for your truck Easy and quick to install or remove With a pair of saw horses

and a channel locks it can be Taken off by one person in about 10 minutes It is leakproof and due to the construction it is very secure and can be locked by a solid locking system Once it Is installed you can set up where ever it works best concerning the lay out of your gear lure set making tools etc . With the doors opening on top you can reach any thing need from the bed of the truck It had all the get up and go that it needed to merge with70 mph traffic and it was a great truck for using farmer's field roads to check your line every day It did good in the snow mud and sometimes slop that happens when a slow moving rain storm goes through The only other vehicle I ever owned that had more get up and goes was my 4 cylinder 750 Honda And that was not a trapping vehicle My Point is even2 hours of checking every morning I would still get 18t o 20 mpg So my truck was not the best truck to use as a truck but it was not bad at being useful in the way I I needed it to be

Sorry I was asking MPG on the mileage part.
I have a 2018 Tacoma access cab when I bough it the salesman was surprised that was what I wanted that and not a 4 door.

The problem today the down side is if you try to buy a new one it’s a lot more expensive to get a stripped down version of what you traded in so it’s a lose lose situation. My 2018 came with a bunch of things I would never use but I still paid for those options plus it has crawl control with a locking rear axle the list when build a new truck was pretty bleak just boom boom and it done building it.

A guy who works for me has a Tacoma access cab. No rear seats or rear doors, just a space behind the front seats to store a bunch of stuff right? I kinda like it. I'd have bought something like that if I didn't have to tow that backhoe. I need to replace the old Ram 50. I need a good winter beater and trapline truck. I really liked that one.

That no back seat is a reverse option in the work truck line. Mine has jump seats but nothing fancy never have used them.
