I wear hearing aids. It is time to replace them. They are about 10 years old. I'm sure that the technology has improved a great deal in that time. I have been going to a hearing aid clinic for several years. They clean and replace parts if needed. Once or twice a year, they do a hearing test. They haven't charged me for these services. I'm not naive enough to think they are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They expect to sell me new hearing aids eventually. They have priced me out a new pair. They have top of the line for $8600. They have a lesser pair for $4400. These have so many more features compared to the ones I have now. They are rechargeable, can pair up to my phone so I can listen to things through my phone which a neighbor says is a huge benefit. They will replace them if they get lost for no charge. Repair is free. The list seems endless but they are $8600. The other end of the spectrum is Costco or Walmart. They are substantially cheaper. My question is does anyone have an opinion about either of these options ? Are the more expensive ones worth the extra money ? Are the features they have worth the extra money considering you will use them daily for 7-10 years ? Or is it a lot of expense and a cheaper pair will do about the same thing for a lot less money ?

Just looking for your thoughts. Thanks !!

My relatives and some friends, have been buying their hearing aids from Costco and have been very satisfied with them.

I have been wearing hearing aids for 10 years, I believe that your hearing loss will
determine how much to spend on aids.

My uncle just got some like the 8600 dollar ones and he says they’re the best ones he’s had yet, he is about one step away from being completely deaf.

I got my last set at Costco. Not as many features as the 2 sets i had before these but the cost was $1995. The rechargeable ones wouldn't work for me, if you are away from power in 3 or 4 days and they are dead. I got the ones that take a battery, they were $100 more but worth it to me

This is correct.
Your audiologist should know what you need and reccommend the correct ones for you.
How did you bugger up your hearing?
My hearing was negatively affected from my career at work,so I didnt have to pay anything for my top of the line hearing aids,it is all covered by workers compensation. On top of that as a permanent disability I was issued a large payment, and a yearly disability claim on my taxes.
If your hearing loss was attributable in whole or in part from your work environment look into workers comp.

I think 8600 is too much. I suggest that you go through the audiology department of your local hospital. I would not go through walmart.. My hearing loss was inflicted in the service without hearing protection.

I have the ones from walmart. They are cheap but are just hearing amplifiers.

When it’s just the wife and me, she whispers, mumbles, talks to herself, and talks in incomplete sentences, all while turning her back and walking away. She needs to go to hearing aid school to learn how to talk to people with impaired hearing. If she would, I could then throw away my hearing aids.

Yes, Charles !! I understand what you are saying. I work as a paramedic on a hospital based ambulance service. We work in the ED when we aren't on calls. Some of the nursing staff and a few of the paramedics still actually believe that masks do any good. I never knew how many verbal clues and how much lip reading I used until the mask thing came along. One of the paramedics wears a mask and then turns her back to me as she's talking to me. Then wonders why I can't understand what she is saying. It makes it tough to communicate.

Your health insurance may cover a portion of the cost. It never hurts to check. Also your wife will talk at you from another room and will not walk to where you are.

My wife does those things as well. My boss talks while walking away and an air compressor running 10 feet away.

My medical doctor told me he heard good things about Costco bit in the end I went to a local hearing business in my town and paid 4k. Very good quality with 3 years warranty including loss. It's nice to drive 5 miles rather than 50 minutes. They are rechargeable and can be recharged in an outlet or any USB port.

If you are a vet, go to the VA and talk to them.

The Army wrecked my hearing so they paid for them and the ones the VA gives you are top of the line surprisingly.

Best part on my VA hearing aids is that they have DB limiters. This cuts the noise that can cause further hearing lose.
